It's lights up in America! This week, we're headed to North America. We'll look at Native American storytelling traditions, the theater that Europeans brought along starting in the 17th century, and how theater developed before and after the American Revolutionary War. Also, a terrible Macbeth rivalry which culminates in a full blown theater riot

An entire episode on North American theatre, and only one mention of Canadian theatre as a precursor to theatre in the future United States. As a Canadian theatre artist myself, I do hope you spend some time on contemporary Canadian theatre (e. g. Robert LePage, Vern Thiessen, Colleen Murphy, Jordan Tannahil, Hannah Moscovitch, the Edmonton Fringe, Stratford, Shaw, Indigenous theatre, bilingual theatre, site-specific theatre, dance theatre--to name a few of the playwrights, institutions, and movements in Canadian theatre which have some international significance) in a future episode. It's an all too common slight to treat Canadian culture as an afterthought to that of our Southern neighbour.

I made my stage debut-as many other kids have done-as one of the Siamese children in a local production of -The King and I. - And yes, we went full-on -yellow-face. - No doubt our makeup would be rightfully considered offensive today, but it brings up some troubling questions: How are towns without large minority populations to perform shows like -The King and I, - -Porgy and Bess, - or -Flower Drum Song? - Should those plays simply not be done? How accurate must racial/ethnic/etc. casting be? Should only Jews be allowed to perform -Fiddler on the Roof? - Must the Sharks in -West Side Story- be authentic Puerto Ricans?

The us-vs-them mentality always seems to latch onto otherwise irrelevant issues, like the wrong person cast as Hamlet to who is eating at Chik--Fil-A to who is kneeling before the flag to who is buying Nike shoes. People get worked up over the silliest little things, because deep down, it's really about demonstrating whose -side- you're on in the big picture.

Thanks for another Op-ed piece Mike. You are still the best at twisting historical facts to opinionate something that is off topic and unrelated.
Also it was always pronounced -the- and not -ye-. Unless you are in Newfoundland to mean singular -you- or as a middle English honorific in which case it's pronounced -ge-.

You don't give southerners enough credit! There is a reason why we have traditionally been opposed to Northern Puritans, we're descended from people from the Northwest of England who supported Charles I in the English Civil War, hence we loved theater, horse racing (and breeding, fox hunting and more.

Crash Course,
Could you please make videos of the CGP Triple Science content because I wanted to make some notes and I noticed that its not like other revision videos you add animations and make it engaging for people to watch. I hope you take this into considerations.

I wonder if you'll talk about African playwrights and directors like Hubert Ogunde and Athol Fugard. Hope you do. Love your show.
Also the African-American Chitlin Theater -but I feel that will be addressed in the next episode.

You mentioned showboats, but you didn't really go into detail about them. How were they constructed, how did they take advantage of the boat stage as opposed to a stationary building stage?

White people dressing up as another race a pastime that seems to never die. This is one of, but probably the worst, thing that theater has given to entertainment culture.
