Amazing man. I sometimes fail to understand the hubris that the human race exhibits. The animal kingdom is rife with such wonders. We learn from them ( biomimicry) but still consider ourselves the best ever creation of God. Well if that is the case then how come we can't make food in our bodies, regrow out amputated hands, listen through feet ( I mean enough to perceive.

The African bush elephant is not only the largest living Terrestrial land animal but there's a lot of Physics involved in the African bush elephant such as the sound vibrations Force Mass and Momentum. Students from St Finians College Secondary School Mullingar Co Westmeath Ireland who do/did LC Physics LC Biology often think about the Physics of the African bush elephant

Hi, I'm Elliott, the producer of this episode. I thought it would be cool on our macro series to take a deep look at a much larger creature than usual. We had a great time filming the refuge elephants in California -- watch it to the end to see them! And please comment and ask questions here. Thx!

This is interesting, someone told me about a group of people in the red sea mountains who can detect or listen to upcoming lorries by listening to the ground. I didn't believe it but, Can human learn to use this skill?

I wonder if conservationists could use the low-frequency sounds to send out a warning to elephants to retreat if they know poachers are in the area? That way the poachers wouldn't be able to hear the warning.

As a relative (of a) primate, I feel very insensible and somewhat jealous when looking at these other big or small creatures with their senses and capabilities beyond my limited imagination.

Literally amazing. I'm also impressed at how ginger they were stepping over the thing hiding the camera. Also, I didn't expect elephant skin to be so bumpy. Probably better to grip with.

In my Kenyan village where I grew up. Elephants invade our farms and eat potatoes and other crops. So destructive and dangerous yet so beautiful when behind an electric fence.

In the elephant refuge, if daily life wears away the foot pad, why do the pedicures scrape them away further? Shouldn't regrowth of the foot material be encouraged instead?

They sense vibrations through the ground? That sounds fake. Clearly they just release a sonic wave from their mouth.
Glad to see other Avatar fans in these comments.

I think the ground transmits sound so poorly compared to air that this is veeery improbable, both low and high sound are caught by their huge ears most probably!

I was thinking how its silly how they got scared of a recording, but then i thought how scary it is to hear a recording of someone screami g out of nowhere.

And thats why elephants that live in cities or countries such as India have it bad. All those city noises and vibrations coming thru their feet stresses them out.

Fun fact: despite the size and all that padding on their feet, elephants actually walk on their tippy toes. The bones of their feet are at the front of the pad.

An interesting parallel to this is how whales can communicate across hundreds of miles away, although they use sound in a more conventional way.

Interesting to watch this right as I'm reading The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin (which is all about seismic activity and sensing seismic waves.

When I read the title I thought of Toph which made me think about earth bending which makes me think of earth bending elephants
reply

Doesnt snake does that too? Like they put their jaws on the ground and listen to the vibrations and it makes them hear.
reply

their high frequency sounds only go a short distance. yknow like, only a mile.
man if i could scream from a mile away
