Nudibranchs may look cute, squishy and defenseless. but watch out. These brightly-colored sea slugs aren't above stealing weapons from their prey. Explore our VR slug and support us on Patreon! The PBS Digital Studios annual survey is now closed

Adorable you say, eerie I'd say. Warning coloration comes to my mind first as Lauren commented. Curiously though, among vertebrates, mostly birds, those coloration look innocuous, even fascinating.
Moving to her defence system, it makes a good sense to have protective weapon on the back, rather than having toxic substances inside the body. Once bitten, she'd be safe for life. A very clever solution, but looks like overkill given the formidable details shown in this footage. No shell, no quick mover, in desperate needs of protection, but exaggerated. Is she so delicious or nutritious?
The video is ok, excellent as usual, showing us amazing facts barely known in nature. If one thinks about how all these facts might be collected, how long scientists spent time to study them etc, he/she could enjoy this program, called Deep Look, twice! The staff appear highly inspired & motivated recently. Keep it up! Thanks

I love ALL animals but these (sea slugs in general) have a special place in my heart. I thank you for the beautiful upload. Nature is AWESOME. the universe is AWESOME! The golden poison dart frog (Phyllobates terribilis) does the same, its one of the most poisonous creatures on the planet (20X more poisonous than other poison dart frogs and does not need to be killed to produce enough poison for poisoned darts/arrows) but it steals its poison from a small beetle, and yet there is one snake species that can eat them to keep everything balanced (humans can learn from this before we destroy everything. Thanks again, and I wish you. and everybody else. a healthy, happy, and wonderful life

I actually kinda like how they shoot out the stolen nematocysts. It kinda reminds me of the Orthogonal diagonalizer from Godzilla: Singular Point and how it creates this chaotic mass of red spikes.

Btw, I saw a bunch of snails the other day, and learned 2 things: 1, a single snail can carry another snails of the same size, 2, they don't give a crap about falling or going underwater.
reply

I knew they stole nematocysts I just thought they pushed them into their skin and stung enemies that way way never realized they launched them like grenades

Saw some gorgeous Nudis off the coast of Borneo, they're the darlings of the underwater world, a photographers dream, I think get like being photographed.

So I removed the shell from my racing snail, you know, to lighten its load and make it faster. Turns out that just made it more sluggish.

Imagine evolving for many years to protect yourself only for some colorful slug comes along and harrasses you to take your poison

evolution is absolutely amazing (however sometimes i can see how simpletons might misinterpret it as intelligent design)

I believe that if one of them were to eat some algae then they could gain the algae's ability to photosynthesize.

So can they only survive where there are hydroids? Can their digestive system harness/collect other 'weapons'?
reply

Hydroid: Stinging the nudibranch's mouth with painful vemon
Nudibranch: jokes on you im into that
