On the one hand, research has been telling us for years that animals are closer to us than we had previously assumed, that they can make conscious decisions, and are not purely driven by instinct, and that they feel emotions. On the other hand, when it comes to this topic, the same people who rejoice about this research are very quick exclaiming that it's not the cat's fault if it eats you, for it just acts instinctively. What is it, then? Do animals possess consciousness, or don't they? As far as I see it, your cat is aware of who you are and of all the love you gave it. And it still makes the conscious decision to eat you because it doesn't give a flying f--- about you. (The same goes for dogs, obviously)

soo. idk, I wonder if maybe we just dont hear about the dogs and cats who DONT eat their owner and starve curled up next to their corpse?
-. but I've watched videos of poor dogs and cat who sit for weeks next to their dead furry friend, even licking it still and refusing to leave it and still seem affectionate towards a week old corpse. to the point of even needing human intervention and disposal of their dead friend!
so, I have to believe some pets are TOO loyal to their owner. more than most of us would actually want our pets to be. even if it creeps me out, I wouldn't want my cat to starve, instead of eating my perfectly -good- body!

So sick of this. Isn't the dog cute? I met a dog with aggression issues, nearly got bite to the throat. I've knee damage. It would not wait. I'd a second dog attack 3 months later. Just attacked walking down the road. I don't like dogs for this reason. Kept happening. I did nothing to set them off. Its not cute. Must love dogs sorry not gonna happen. The negative views of cats just ticks me off. Why not put two pictures up. I feel its the same old chestnut twist it to dogs are better. I can't think of one positive except the service dogs. A lot can be very dangerous. Let people have their opinion

Well I think if a body has been left alone for a while to decompose, it's a good thing if the pet eats them because it is so messy to clean all that mess up. We had a neighbor who passed away alone and remained like this for at least 2 weeks until the police broke into his flat, the smell was indescribable and it pentrated the entire building and every fiber of our being (gross) and it lingered for a long time after that, no amount of cleaning mattered

I think it's weird to judge cats or any animal for eating their owner's corpse. Animals don't have any concept of life after death or karma or anything like that. If you're dead, they could be grieving and still eat your corpse. When you die, animals may remember you and still hold you dear in memories, but your corpse isn't anything more than flesh for animals. Respecting or preserving the dead is a human constract.

My mother passed away in her house and was dead for almost 5 days before we found her. I'm sure all or some of her 27 cats with no food or water left had to survive somehow. is it upsetting? I'm not sure. what I'm sure of if she was gone, and she would have cared more about them surviving. I adopted 2 of them and they're the most loving cats ever. It's meat and you're starving, not a cat trait, but a survival trait.

I've worked at a shelter for 3 years and we received cats who ate their owners quite frequently actually.
Unfortunately there are quite a lot of (elderly) people who aren't really missed by anyone after they pass away. Sometimes it can take up to 2-3 months before anyone notices the smell.
The cat(s) are sadly left to feed on whatever they can find and eventually resort to eating the corpse of the owner.

Just sounds like a normal thing an animal would do to ensure It-s own survival.
Heck, if I died and my friends were close to starving to death, I-d rather want them to cook me up than end up dead too.
Might buy them enough time to survive, I get to be of use after death and it wouldn-t cost me a thing since I-m already dead.

I love my dogs more than anything. And I've never had any delusions about what they would do if I died. I'll never understand why people care what happens to their rotting corpses. The animals that eat their dead owners are the ones who really suffer because they are not easily adopted afterwards.

I ran out of cat food for about 12 hours, waiting for the door dash to come. My one cat has nibbled my big toe twice and my finger once. now I'm here lol. I've lost trust with one of my cats because now I know she would not hesitate to eat me if needed -- and I'm not even dead
