It's a roller coaster of emotions for us today as we go through the process of testing two VERY unconventional ways of cooking steak. Some with results better than others. Dishwasher sous vide is a thing, as is drink cooler sous vide. Just drop a bunch of vacuum packed steaks in a cooler, dump in hot water, keep topping it off as it cools. I used that method to cook 25 steaks one weekend, over the course of a few hours. I maybe dumped in 3 or 4 fresh pots of boiling water in it. Came out amazing.

Sam, and everyone else. Its best to REST a steak for 10min right after Sous Vide, and or Right from the oven, when using the Reverse Sear method. Why? Because that allows the steak to fully come up to Medium-Rare temp. and then it will spend the rest of that time, Cooling down to near Room Temp. Once its finished resting. and it has cooled down considerably. you can Pan Sear it, and there will be FAR less potentials for the steak to get any Medium Banding within it. The pre-cooling helps prevent the steak from over-cooking, when you are Searing it (for those 60 seconds per side.
This will thus net you a perfect Medium Rare, from the very Center. to the very EDGE of the searing (less than 1mm of depth. And. once you have finished Searing the Steak. you can Serve it IMMEDIATELY, Hot (Since the steak already Rested.

Watched this earlier and didn't really think about the microwave not working. Then got pissed. Some guy out there loves steak but his partner won't let him cook them in apartment cause sucky vent hood and fire alarm goes off. He goes out and spends 35- 50 on a couple of nice ribeyes and ends up w that. Alternatively, think you need to try it one more time. My microwave lets you select power rating on a timed cook. Maybe put it at 30 or 40% power for 10 to 15 minutes and see how it's doing. Had microwave that started as soon as you selected popcorn. Have to hit start on the one I have now. It's still a great video. You guys always show the human side

I do know from experience, you can cook your lunch if it is in a can or wrapped in aluminum foil on the exaust manifold of your older vehicles. Im a truck driver, and fir years hested my lunch in the turbo on the hot side of the piping. The key is make sure you put a small hole in the lid to vent. And if wrapped in foil, just set near the manifold. If not it will burn it. But if you want to prank a new guy, omit the part about the vent hole. the can will go boom. Yes its funny as you would think.

Along the same line. Few years ago I noticed my oven light had been on all night. checked the temp with a thermometer. 130F with two oven lights
Since then I have done three 6 bone prime ribs. Last Christmas 26 hours in the Susie Bake Oven. Transported to party and finished in a 500F oven until the smoke stated pouring out. about 10 minutes. Rave reviews. My go to method from now on

a microwave doesn't heat evenly. i have a hard time believing the tiktokker was being honest sam, your microwave is doing what microwaves do. perhaps try loading the meat off-center, should you even wish to try this again. (EDIT: AAAAAND i commented too early, as usual)
very interesting video! i love that you're doing these

There's a steak place in town that uses a dishwasher to sous-vide their steaks before the dinner rush. They just load it up (it will cook a lot more steaks than a regular sous vide machine, cook them for a couple hours, then sear them as needed. The customers will never know, and why would they care? The steaks are perfect.

Sam - Lets see some more of your healthy selections! The vid that you did on those before was FANTASTIC! I would MUCH rather have 4 oz of VERY VERY good meat and a good selection of veggies to go with it, than a 42 oz SLAB O MEAT. Give us TOP SHELF meals that are fit for a king (not to feed the entire platoon, eh?

Always season your steaks before you put in in the bag for sous vide. The salt has time to pernitrate the meat during the cook and you don't lose it to the sear. Also, butter in the bag is not the best way either, if you want to butter baste during the sear that is the correct time.

That was a good one! 4-1! But the dishwasher sous vide is an excellent idea, especialy for a tomahawk steak that I will try next time. I think the long cycle will be perfect, around 2 hours, considering the thickness of the monster. Thanks from Montreal (at the oposite of Vancouver)

Microwaves ruin meat! When I worked in restaurants, if you were to heat up a steak for instance, you would microwave for 20-30 seconds at a time then let rest for 20 seconds after each time. Otherwise it would do just like yours and way over cook the outside and make it tough.

Hey, guys, I don't know if we're watching the same video, but the video I saw was done by heating a plate of oil and cooking the stake in the hot oil, flipping it halfway through. No idea of how good(or not) it would taste, but you might try this option.

Would be cool to cook a steak on an engine manifold. But it would have to be on an engine that gets really warm. Like an old V-8 Big block. If you know someone with a hot rod, that would be a cool show. On the road with steak. LOL.

This is so crazy! Two days ago I saw a clip of Vincent Price cooking fish and zucchini in a dishwasher on Johnny Carson, and of course it worked. Yeah, so this isn t new. The show aired sometime in the 70s.

You might try a non microwave safe plate like ceramic, that gets hot AF. I say this only bcuz I think it would be like cooking on a flat top maybe it wouldn t just cook from the edge in who knows lol.

Sam. Even Though You Can Cook Mear in A Dish Washer, That Would Eat A Ton Of Electricity Running An Hour And A Half.
I Wouldn't Recommend It.
It Was A Great Experiment, But Not Practical

I used your superb spatchcock turkey recipe for Thanksgiving last year. Could you do make ahead sides, so I can do everything early, then just concentrate on the turkey and enjoy my guests?
reply

Maybe, just maybe, if you're going to do these experiments and risk ruining a good steak. You might want to do adequate research and make sure you know what the program is. Just sayin'!

What a wonderful video, the excitement, kid in a sweet shop makes it brilliant. We would all be the same given the opportunity. So much thanks for letting us share. Brilliant
reply

Yeah, it was a joke but it was a fun video! I've heard of people cooking fish in the dishwasher, why not a steak? Might just try it for the heck of it now! Thanks, Sam!
