Couple of things. One we do have some air B&B's here so if hotels seem expensive check them out, and if you want to see some beautiful nature and not spend a whole lot of money. I highly recommend Alexander Spring campground located in The Ocala National Forrest located in central Florida. Also Blue Spring State Park has manatees in the winter time, lots of them quite a sight to see. Our campgrounds are a great place to enjoy a day of swimming in crystal clear swimming springs some with scuba diving, snorkeling, nature trails, and canoe & Kayak rentals. If you do like to camp though, we have hundreds of campground all over the state some are nicer than others. If you like to camp, it is cheaper than a hotel and again beautiful campgrounds, lots of wildlife. Just make sure you only swim in the designated area's gators are no joke. An it is against the law to feed the gators so don't! If you hear thunder? Get out of the water! If you can hear thunder that means lightening is within striking distance so get out of the water if you hear thunder. You'll want to get yourself some insect repellent too. The mosquitos and other biting insects are pretty bad here, as my girlfriend from Germany can tell you. She got eaten up so bad by bugs, but she still loves Florida, because she loves the nature and wildlife here. An don't forget to try some of the local restaurants here not just the chain restaurants. We have lots of great barbecue like all the southern states, key lime pie, and lots of Authentic Cuban restaurants try the Cuban sandwich. Tarpon Springs is a Greek town with lots of Greek restaurants run by Greeks so the food is really good. St. Augustine is a pretty interesting place with a lot of history, but it is also very much a tourist trap and lots of over priced tourist stores. If you want fresh Florida oranges the places to go will be at a farmers market or flea market. There are many gas stations along our interstates that sell oranges and tangerine other citrus stuff etc, but they are overpriced. Just a few tips to make your trip here less expensive when you come here.

some things To know about if your visiting Florida
1. Dont underestimate the weather most of the year its 88-92F and if youre from out of state from another hot state, Florida will feel way hotter with the humidity being anywhere from 60%-90% which will make the 88F feel like 99-101 degrees so remember to cool off when you can (also btw the east coast is gets way cooler temp wise at night and the evening bc youre getting that Atlantic breeze compared to the west coast of Florida where you get a warmer breeze in the evening and night so it just depends on what you like
2. If you come in the our winter time which is November and December maybe sometimes but mostly January and February dont be those weird people that are wearing open toed shoes, cargo shorts and a t shirt when its 69 degrees or lower out and we only have days that are sub 50 degrees only about less than 10 days during our winter season
3. Our cold climate can change very quickly it can be 66 in the morning at 8am and be 84 in the afternoon at 2pm
4. Dont feel weird about taking pictures of sunsets or beaches no one will think youre a dumb tourist because we take pics of sunsets a lot too even.
5. If youre more into agriculture and like to see that stuff almost all of Floridas agriculture is in the middle of the state running south to north
6. Dont go exceedingly slow while driving during afternoon hard down pours especially during the summer its fine and understandable if you adjust your speed some to give yourself more distance to brake and accelerate but just trust yourself and watch youre surrounding as everyone else does during downpours, because for some reason Florida drivers go crazy and get some serious road rage to out of state people who drive slow in rain

Some things to add as a Native Floridian
1)To Walter's first point, don't get into any body of water in Florida (save the ocean or springs. Always a chance there is a gator. If you somehow find one, run sig zag. They can't change direction easily
2)Snow birds are pretty much everywhere south of Bradenton on the West Coast. Not sure about South Florida, but its packed there year round. Walter is right about the timing
3)Also, when we talked about South Florida, we mean Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade county. It's a different world to the rest of Florida
4)There are other beaches besides Clearwater. Manatee and Sarasota have some nice beaches if you want to beat the crowd. They are more the typical Florida beach rather than the white sands of Clearwater. The panhandle has some nice ones as well thought haven't been up there much.
5)Try to conserve water when you can. Florida has it's own aquifer, so water conservation is a big thing here. Just don't leave things running.
6)Some other cool spots would be the springs. Crystal River/Homosassa area is really cool as well. It's north of Brooksville if that helps
7)Foodwise, it's similar to the rest of the south, but Grouper is a local fish in the Tampa area and I recommend it. Smoked Mullet dips is great too. There are also a lot of small Mexican restaurants.

Can I please mention that there is more to Florida than Disney World! I came to Florida on my own when in my sixties, I don't drink, or gamble - boring huh! But I do like critters. I was staying in Naples, the Conservatory there is splendid, seeing a Manatee up close for the first time was wonderful, going to Sanibel and collecting the most interesting shells, by sitting on the beach and finding out what you're sitting on, equally fabulous. I didn't feel the need to spend money on the cleaned and mounted samples in the tourist shops, there's also a wild life park, run by the Audobon Society, I can't remember it's name but, as well as birds and butterflies I saw snakes and small alligators, but from a raised walkway, so both they and I were safe. The air-boat ride in the Everglades wasn't bad either. I had a fabulous time!

Grew up in Clearwater, moved to Orlando after 30 years. Been here 7 years now. This video is definitely great for tips! PLEASE don't leave trash on the beaches- or anywhere for that matter! Also, the beach trolley is great for going all along the beach towns there! Eat at Frenchy's Rockaway and order the She Crab Soup- you will thank me later: )
The weather is crazy- if you are coming in the summer, it WILL rain almost everyday you are here- sometimes not all day but yes, sometimes all day too. If you are from the West Coast and think you know what HOT is- you haven't felt HUMID HOT. It's a whoooole different level. It gets so hot here that you can't enjoy being outside at ALL. Even the beach gets miserable.

You forgot mosquitos and fire ants. Yes ants in your pants is not just a saying. Everything in Florida either bites or stings. Plus Sarasota beaches are much better crystal clear water because of they way the currants run out of Tamps Bay Northward. My stomping grounds was Clearwater. If your a storm lover summer time is the best. Tropical downpoors you can almost set your watch too. They pop up in the afternoon and are gone in 30 minutes sun shiny again. It can literally be raining over top your hotel and nowhere else.

You forgot to mention that if youre a woman dont stand around minding your own business because FL is a police state. Even if you arent doing anything wrong and havent done anything wrong the cops will stop and ask for your name and SS #. They run your name without probable cause. Thats bull shit! They dont do that where I come from. Florida is a POLICE STATE where a persons civil rights and liberties dont matter.

#1 Is vital. I had a Sand Crane take issue with me while driving through the Bayou between Spring Hill and a deserted beach. It just stopped in the middle of road. He just stood in the middle of the road and mean mugged me for 45 minutes.
I honked once and he let me know it was his road. He held me hostage for being a dick. Of course I didn't get out of the car. He was gorgeous.
Respect the wildlife.

I live in citrus county and I've met multiple tourist and they all did the number one thing not to do while in the water here. Do not make splashes and long movements fast. You will get the attention you do not want for the gators and don't touch the plants 7 minute itch is real everything in Florida will try and kill you

FL has fire ants. If you pick oranges in an Orange Grove, know they are there. They all bite at once. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, heck a Sombrero. If you have fair skin, you will get burnt. Know your snakes, coral, rattlesnakes, water moccasins. The last is aggressive & can climb/drop into your boat.
