If you're in the market for a family-friendly EV, costing up to 40, 000, which means you can have one on your driveway for around 100 a week given how most people buy cars, your options have never been broader. There are more than two dozen such cars on the market today. These are the best 12 of them. We have competitors from: BYD, Cupra, Hyundai, Jeep, kia, MG, Renault, Smart, Tesla, Vauxhall, Volkswagen And Volvo ready to face off as we name Britain’s best sub-40k electric car. On the way we will talk about their prices but also finance deals because that’s how most customers buy cars, and unless otherwise stated assuming a deposit of 4000, likely from a trade in. At the end there’ll be a big chart outlining all of those details, correct as of April 2024 when we conducted the test. 00: 00 Introduction 01: 19 BYD Dolphin 03: 23 Cupra Born 06: 05 Hyundai Kona EV 08: 10 Jeep Avenger 09: 58 Kia Niro 11: 25 MG4 13: 20 Renault Megane E 14: 53 Smart #1 16: 50 Tesla Model 3 20: 17 Vauxhall Astra Electric 21: 43 Volkswagen ID3 22: 56 Volvo EX30 25: 36 The finishing positions, 12th to 3rd 27: 08 The podium positions 27: 43 Outro 27: 56 Finance summary

i get that youre a legacy car magazine but when focusing on EVs theres one thing you absolutely need to include all the time: the base range of an EV is basically irrelevant. because either im not going far and charge at home all the time so its always full, or im going that far (on a roadtrip or what have you) that the base range becomes irrelecant compared to the rechargability. so max charging peak charging curve. Out of Spec invented the 10% challenge which is: How many miles can you add when arriving at a charging station at 10% SOC in 15 minutes time. THAT is the real data that needs to be included. base range is fine but you drive it empty once and from that point on your base range does nothing for you and its all about rechargability. so how many miles can you add in X amount of minutes when arriving empty or close to empty. this is such a good metric because it also already includes its efficiency.
you need to test that in the future and include it in every EV test. EV people care about that so much more than anything you have mentioned in this test. you need to keep up. ;)

That megane e-tech is such a good looking thkng.
Theres only that and the jeep which have any kind of appeal to me. The rest are generic cack, or like the Volvo and Tesla utterly ruined with safety shite and screens. Give me buttons and stalks.

Great test Did you hear about the parts issues with some of the Chinese brands Insurers are refusing to cover some of them because there is no parts availability to fix them after an accident. Not sure if that's really true or just hearsay.

You can tell Matt is really frustrated with the latest cars, the while touchscreen stuff. I think it is dangerous and should have been stopped

Seems to me that a lot of these negative comments are by a 10 yr old. He hates EV’s because his dad loves Eton muster rather than him
