I knew someone who got ripped off by a dealer for a power steering flush on a 3 year old Chevy Impala with 30k miles on it.
They said she needed it or it would void her warranty
I checked her manual and there wasnt even a recommended time or mileage to change the fluid!
I called the 800 number for GM and got put on hold twice.
They didnt have an answer either.
They scammed her and I called the Attorney general's office and told them.
Then I called the Service Manager and asked why they chargered her 88 for a Power Steering flush on a car with only 30k miles on it!
I told him Id already called the Attorney general's office.
He quietly said 3 words to me:
Send her back
They refunded her money.
Moral of the story is after owning over 100 cars in my life, power steering fluid lasts a long time unless youve had a leak or other problem with the system.

my suggestion:
- heat up the fluid by turning the steering wheel lock to lock 6 six times per side while running and on the ground.
(hopefully the hot fluid will carry more contaminants)
-gloves are always a good idea. Eventually the chemicals will cause a sensitivity and the skin on your hands will react to any sort of chemical irritant. Additionally, there is a subtle and cumulative effect on the entire body which can be easily avoided.

Thanks Chris. No more embarrassing high pitch whine while starting the engine, driving and turning corners and You saved me a ton of money and from getting robbed! Total cost, 12. 00 and 1. 5 hrs of siphoning out old oil. I didn't bleed it though the hose though but i did a good job and its worked perfectly and my engine runs crazy quiet! WHEW.
Thanks from Brooklyn NY

Awesome video as always. Only one thing I would add. If you buy a foot of power steering hose, you can attach it to the return hose fitting and toss both hoses in an empty jug. This will eliminate a great deal of mess, when you flush the fluid by turning the steering wheel. Makes sure the bottle is clear, so you can see when the new fluid begins to flow. Great video Chris.

Thank you so much Chris! Im 17 and I have a used 2003 Ford Taurus that came with the whine. I thought the pump was bad and replaced it as well as the fluid inside of it but never thought to unhook the return line Opened the pump the other day to see dirty fluid still in there after my power steering went out and realized what I did wrong. I guess you live and learn: )

can you just suction out the bad fluid fom the resovoir and fill up with new fluid and keep driving a few days, then repeat the process over and over slowly diluting the old fluid into new fluid? i dont have the means to get underneath the car to do a full drain/flush but figure any cleaner fluid is better than nothing?

I like the easy method better Ill do that one a few times and avoid the mess. No chance of creating a busted line, and no mess to clean up. Easier to just pump out old fluid and refill. Fluid is cheap; lines, parts and labor if you cant fix it yourself are more expensive.

This, as always is a great video. I'd share that for changing the oil in a boat with an inboard they sell this oil removal pump that you may find even more useful then a turkey baster. Either way great video.
