Why New Cars are a Rip-off to Repair RavennaAl: Back in the 50s, mechanics got 50% of the shop rate. Over the years its shrunk. When I first started in the mid 70s, the top guys were getting 1/3 of the shop rate. Today, youre lucky if you get 20%. You have to continually buy new tools because they keep changing the nuts and bolts. Just when you start to understand how a system works on a car, they change everything and you have to relearn it all. You are constantly hurting yourself (back pains are very common because of ruptured discs) and there are times when all you can do is guess at whats wrong because all the tests say that everything is OK. The saddest part is knowing that some kid coming out of college will start off at a job not knowing much of anything about his job, and hell get paid more than you are after 30+ years repairing cars. Its a hard job that gets NO respect as everyone assumes that youre just out to rip them off. Whenever I get a customer that starts telling me that they think I overcharged them, I simply say Well, if thats the way you feel, next time fix your car yourself and then come back and tell me you think I charged too much This job sucks, but Im too old to start over. I only have 3 more years then I can retire. I wouldnt wish this job on anyone

Its also a matter of the hard real time requirements in a car. When you hit that ABS break pedal, the breaks have a hard time limit to react. Its got to be milliseconds and its got to be consistent. The way a processor works, it can really only do one thing at a time. Its really fast and can do a million things a second, so to make it look like its doing more than one thing at a time we usually just make it switch between things really fast. Basically, if you need to do more than one thing at once, but you only have one brain, you have to share the brain So your fuel injection system says Hey breaks, mom said its my turn to use the brain, move over and the breaks are off the computer. Scheduling who gets their turn on brain and when in a way that means the breaks can still react in 5 milliseconds or less every single time without stepping over anything else is really, really complicated. So we just dont do that. The breaks get their own microprocessor, the fuel injection system gets its own microprocessor, the airbags get their own processor, everything has its own brain and you _never ever_ have a situation where the breaks dont react in time because they had to wait their turn to get the brain from the airbags first.

CANBus is actually a very reliable system. unless you have a physical hardware issues. Each node on the bus is supposed to have resistors to prevent a shorted module from interfering with the rest. If a module doesnt respond when its being asked, theres a problem. If your wires are cut from an accident, you need a wiring diagram to find out which is the last module you can talk to. That means the line was cut after that. Im an electrical engineer and it was actually still difficult to diagnose issues on the CANBus. When it works, the car can test everything itself. You can see hundreds of parameters and graph them in real time or analyze them after. The factory can run a full self-test using scripts that can generate full reports of all parameters. Youre absolutely right. If the car wasnt built perfectly, was repaired wrong, or was in an accident - youre not having a fun time. You MUST have a scan tool nowadays. I plugged it into my car and it told me the starter was jammed. I replaced the starter and were good to go. If I didnt have any engineering knowledge - forget it. You cant expect a mechanic to be an expert on the electronics design without valuing them more.

I had a Mercedes S 320, I kept it up with junkyard parts. We have a good one here in Columbus, Ohio for imports(still expensive. Once I started seeing microprocessors in my sleep from running problems down I got rid of it. Ill still work on the older diesels for my Dad and a uncle who loves them, but other than that Ill probably beat you with a torque wrench just for bringing it to me. Just having your blower motor go bad during winter is a big expensive freaking deal. Motor ran great and drove like Heaven on wheels. I enjoyed it for about 8yrs, but microprocessor related problems, battery draining electrical vampirism prompted me to drive a stake through its German heart. Im not a certified mechanic, but have worked on cars and trucks since I was 13. Im 48, and have saved myself a lot of money doing so. Love Scottys videos, I appreciate the knowledge and tips from an honest certified, possibly certifiable mechanic. My dad got me started taking off parts he would latter replace, other than working for G. M, he would buy wrecks, fix them, and resale them. I learned body work as a teen too. Never could paint though, I drove a few cars that never made it past primer.

Scotty, my wife worked at a chev, subaru dealer many years back. The subarus in 2000 had more computers than Apollo 11. No joke, but way lighter in the cars than the NASA project. The government cant do anything light or efficient. These computers, processors are a pain Mechanics are dumbed down, read the tool, but fail to understand why things quit. Replace parts until it works, or maybe not. I know someone that kept going to a chev dealer to fix a engine light on, then spent 800 on a computer module, still had the problem. The dealer kept changing parts. So, 1200 latter, it sort of worked. I bought a scan tool several years ago, saved me hundreds to help me figure it out. Stealerships have that marble and glass palace show room, somebodys paying for. I had a recall on my ford ranger, for airbags. Took it in, they recommended a tire rotation when it was done 2 days before. Tires were worn perfect. They couldnt find anything else, it runs fine I keep it up. But they wanted me back in for something to pay for that fancy show room and coffee stand

Say what you want about old cars (old benzes in my case) but they are way easier to repair and more importantly, to diagnose. My mercedes has had some issues but being a mostly mechanical system, any car guy with a mechanics mind can figure out the system and figure out the issue. The climate control is a vaccum system so if there is an issue, a vac leak or pressure issue is a cause. The fuel pump you can test but also just listen to it. You can see almost all the bits that make the engine work as well and detect leaks without miles of plastic crud covering everything to. Now they had about 6 computors in my 1989 mercedes s class but the car will run without them, not well though. And all are accessible for testing and replacement if needed. If the Tec is so advanced then why is there 100 plus computors adding all that weight and pain in the assery. Tec is supposed to make life easier and more enjoyable by freeing up time and energy

Wow. It doesnt even tell you which computer isnt communicating? Thats just basic stuff. I build normal desktop computers for fun all the time, and every decent motherboard will tell you exactly which part isnt working. Its called the POST test, (Power On Self Test, and it goes through every part connected up to the computer and checks to make sure its all working correctly before the thing will turn on. If something isnt working, itll (usually) give you a scan code that tells you which thing it is. And youre telling me that these guys built a car and sold it to me for 30 thousand dollars and they cant even give me a scan code when a computer part is on the fritz?

Trade school for four years, when I hit the job market (early 00s) they were offering 10/hr MAX for a tech unless you were going on the job by job basis. Most offers were 7-9 & I could make more & stay clean stocking shelves, I wouldnt have to pay for specialty tools or classes either driving a forklift. 14/hr to drive a forklift or 10 to be under a grimey chassis 12 months out of the year when the shop is ALWAYS too hot or too cold, snow & slush falling down te back of your shirt 6 months out of the year. Tough choice Now I just fix my own cars, cant be bothered with someone elses headache when I have enough of my own

I took my Toyota Prius to a Ford sub-division shop, to put on front brakes in Detroit, Michigan. (because it was close by. I figured they must know what they are doing. I had to take it back there three times, until they finally admitted to me when I told them Hey, I once used to fix my own brakes, these brakes are not done right So they finally fessed up, they didnt have the specialized equipment to properly bleed my brakes But didnt bother to tell me this before they did the job, or before I paid them So now I have to take it somewhere else to have the brakes bleed

Hi Scotty, my name is John, I have a 2004 F150 Air Conditioning does not run. I took it in to be recharged and was told that is not the issue. They tried the Fuses and Relay and Condenser. The AC apparently does not receive power to turn on, I thought maybe the Serpentine Belt may be routed wrong but that is not the problem I am wondering if you have any idea on what it could be. My Truck rides like a cloud I plan on having it for many more years, it is a F150 Rock solid for the exception of the AC. Would you have any idea on what they are missing?
