Bonjour / France and Germany are finally connected with a direct night train! On December 11th ÖBB relaunched a new night train between Berlin and Paris/Brussels! It was a true pleasure to be share this inaugural journey with Benjamin aka -globetolter and Sebastian from -EisenbahninODCH - TRIP INFORMATION - Date: DECEMBER 2023 Railway company: ÖBB in cooperation with DB and SNCF Route: Berlin Hbf to Paris Est Time: 14 hours 6 minutes Price: Around 69- in couchette Credit for the CNL and RZD trains -TERRYExpresS -Railtrotter

This connection is more important than all others at this moment. Why? Because it simply gives residents of Central and Eastern Europe a chance to connect with Western Europe in a reasonable time and with a minimum number of transfers. For example, I love backpacking and if I want to get to the Pyrenees from Poland, I can do it by three trains (including two night ones) and still have a lot of time to explore Berlin and Paris. How cool is that. And adding the fact that traveling with a large backpack I would pay a similar (if not higher) price with airlines, the train now makes even more sense.

Thanks for the video, Thibault. A little comment about your new style video - I'm sorry but I preferred the sub title style. I find it easier to understand - not your accent, but sometimes I would like to see what the place names are or to pause on details. Plus then you also get the real sounds of the railway. There are so many people doing voice over videos so I think you get lost in amongst them all. Anyway, just my opinion. I've been loving your videos for ages!

For a overnight train to compete against airlines, it need to arrive at destination before 08: 00 or at very least before 09: 00, otherwise people take first flight of the day and arrive earlier at destination. S988km in 14 hours is 70kmh average. Increase average speed to 80, and you cut 2 hours off and arrive 2 hours earlier. But f it gets too popular it becomes useless sicne there is never any available rooms for the day that your need to travel.

European Sleeper has announced a -1m sharefunding round from December 27, to support marketing and sales for its extension from Berlin to Dresden and Praha from March 25 and the introduction of a dining car. Investors will get a discount on future purchases of train tickets. The operator says it has now run more than 150 night trains on the Brussels - Berlin route and transported over 30 000 passengers.

People are looking for a more convenient way to travel between countries without having to use air travel only thing that would put families off would be the cost, budget airlines by booking in advance can compete better with costs of course booking a seat only will negate costs but families need a compartment so it will be interesting to see the pricing of travel at peak holiday times, great post

I applaud every effort to expand rail passenger service! It makes sense to have daily night trains that, as you said, allow passengers to sleep through the night and wake up near their destinations. The cost per ticket is dramatically lower than the amount involved in day time travel plus hotel accommodations. Congratulations to everyone involved! Thank you for the excellent video.

Very nice Video Thibault, I'm really a bit jealous of all the journeys you're doing. But I shouldn't complain, I'm getting around quite a bit myself and even though I haven't been on this service for the inaugural journey, I will be traveling on this train in February and on the all new Nightjet from Innsbruck to Hamburg in January and I am really looking forward to these journeys.

Thanks for taking us along, Thibault. It's great that OBB has re-introduced or introduces more night trains across Europe. Sure, there must be many gaps that have yet to be filled, but it's a good start. It's also encouraging that this new service is booked to capacity, not to mention the ambition to increase the frequency to a daily service within the next 12 months.

It's great, in theory. In practice, trains in Germany and Austria are a lot of times delayed and/or canceled. So if you have an important appointment in the morning, taking the train is too unreliable at this point. Hope this changes, as I'm a diehard train fan, but let's be realistic.

I can totally see why you were emotional; that must have been an amazing moment to arrive back in your capital on the first overnight train from Germany and with THAT sort of welcome!
And at 13: 25, that was a great save with that really close post coming up on you and your phone!

Congratulations to OBB and Nightjet for this historic accomplishment, showing once and for all that the night trains are far from dead, that they are wanted now more than ever.
Now, on to the next battle: Revive the Restaurant Car! Bring back the Bistro!

Nightjet is going to be the next big thing in European Railways. I am super excited with the new connection between Barcelona and Vienna starting in late 2024. Congrats for this travel and the video! Cheers!

I remember taking one of the last ICNL to Paris. We went there for a weekend trip and it was super practical. It-s really nice to see a night train running again in this route

OBB has been doing a great job with Nighjet. Can't wait for seing them expand into Spain, maybe even Portugal and UK why not (a challenge) once they get new equipment.

Love nighttrains but this is a litlte short! Warschau to Milan or Paris to Rome or Stockholm to Paris yes but this is just a short night nothing more!

You missed pointing out that the French Infrastructure Minister was with you on the train speaking both in Berlin and Paris! Clear committment!

J'etais a l'inauguration avec les ambassadeurs de France, d'Autriche et Clement Beaune, invite par l'Autriche. Dommage qu'on ne soit pas vus.

Don-t listen to the haters
Thibault. I love the voice-overs, and your English is excellent. I can understand everything without problem.

What an amazing trip, and such a great opportunity for you to be invited on the inaugural run! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!

If you don't mind my asking, what was the impetus for you to switch to voiceover narration as opposed to visual text on the screen?
reply

You heard on your critics and now your videos while your speaking are awesome. Speaking brings so much more life in the video -

Nightjet experience does not worth money. Cca 300 Euros for ( 2+1) persons in Sleeper car on Rome- Vienna is really, really to expencive.
reply

Hmm, it's not very fast. 950 km in 14 hour. I think the Amsterdam - Vienna train does around 1200 in km in around 12 hours.
reply

Perhaps NIGHTJET could run a night service from London St. Pancras International to Berlin and other cities in Germany.
reply

Great video. I really enjoyed the view out of the back with the mist all around the landscape. So awesome. Thank You.

Too bad TGV isn't allowed to run at its 2007 world speed record: Berlin-Paris 900km at 574 kph = about 1h34mn! -
reply

Great video indeed! Yes we need overnights train, not all people like or can use aircrafts.

Love the video. Some advice. Speak slower. I'm a native English speaker and I had to turn on the captioning.

The grandma-s house joke made me laugh out loud. The rest of the review was also excellent, love your work

France needs more locomotives that can take this nightjet in and out of paris maybe a vectron?
reply

-Simply Railway which one is better for you- Wien Hbf or Berlin Hbf?
Btw, nice catch at 8: 44 -

reply

Why not just fly between Paris and Berlin on a flight at 6am. You'll still make morning meetings
reply

Great trip. Finally Paris - Berlin sleeper Train is operating again with the new face.
reply

Night Trains is the way to travel - I will take that over any other mode of traveling.
reply

-Like sleeping at your Grandmother's house- sounds like a great marketing tagline.
