Every near miss has an impact - Rail Safety Week 2019

Every single near miss has an impact. Close calls take a huge toll on train drivers and those who narrowly miss death. This video tells their story. Visit nearmisses. co. nz to learn more. Trains take a very, very long time to brake. The sheer horror of stories of deaths by train are heart-wrenching, especially for those who witnessed it. There is a train station near where I live. It’s a college town, and college students are everywhere. Unfortunately, two have been hit by trains in the last few years and died. It’s absolutely terrifying, and I feel horrible for the witnesses and the driver of the train who couldn’t do anything to stop it

Change the CULTURE: There needs to be consistent messaging in schools, media, and signage. Similarities MUST be provided to the public showcasing the correlation between these train strikes and events in the natural world which necessarily remove those specimens lacking the fundamental instincts required by animals to survive. While nothing can deter the afflicted from their self-destruction, an evolution in cultural perception would GREATLY benefit society by 1- reducing the cost of litigation resulting from the events. 2- Reducing the level of trauma experienced by train operators, by rethinking their roles as agents of improvement. 3- Improvements to the industry, by reducing the cost of brake maintenance, and the reinforcement of the strike surfaces at the front of the vehicle. 4- Easing the grieving process for those close to the ones who are struck, by helping them understand that the incident was ultimately meant to be.
If this suggestion comes across as nothing more than sarcastic humor, then those viewing it as such are part of the current problem.

It's one thing showing people dashcam footage of these events. It's another thing entirely actually experiencing it. We simply can't get across what it must feel like to be the person behind the controls staring down at a situation you have absolutely no more control over as death comes hurtling toward you, thinking you're about to inadvertently end someone's life and there's nothing you can do about it.
It's not just about don't get hit by a train it's a lack of forethought or empathy for those who have to watch it happen. It doesn't matter if you get hit or not. What matters is the trauma you leave behind by being so reckless.

reply

Near misses must be horrifying for both the drivers and the pedestrians. I can only imagine what drivers are feeling in such a situation. Not being able to do much, expecting the worst case scenario. People underestimate how long the braking distance of a train is. My best friend had been sick of his job as a banker and became a train driver for Deutsche Bahn through retraining. He told me that, statistically, every driver will experience at least two incidents of personal injury in their career. Fortunately, he has not had such an experience. Yet.
I'm already dreading the day when he can no longer say that.

reply

I just don't understand these people. Is it too much to look before you cross Is it too much not to cross when it's clear that a train is approaching nearby Can you not wait a minute or even just a few seconds for the train to pass All at the risk of your one and only life along with the risk of permanent trauma for the train driver, for what A few extra seconds of your day, a day of which you nearly completely lost along with the rest of your remaining days There are some people out there I simply cannot wrap my head around.
reply

why do people actually do this risking their lives for saving like 15-30 seconds.
i live in bangladesh, and when i cross the khilgaon rail station (with a vehicle of sorts) i always see people crossing the rain lines like mad, but atleast the number of people crossing decreases as the train comes near, i never have seen any near misses but my heart beats so fast when i see people crossing the railway tracks and i can't even imagine the horror of train drivers that have to endure daily near misses and possibly fatalities

I have a relative who worked on freight trains here in the US. On a night close to Christmas, he got called out to help clean up an accident. A man had driven around the gates, and didn't make it. When he got there, they were taking his wife away, but he wouldn't leave in the ambulance with her. He kept begging them to get the baby. They thought he was delusional--there was no baby in the car. They later found the baby crushed up under the dash.
reply

As much as the message is totally fair, and when a siren is blaring and a flashing light are both telling you to NOT cross when the multitons mass of steel is stomping towards you.
Why not, just put barriers around these spots It's kinda hard to rush in rails when you have a barrier blocking it. And sadly, if someone stills crosses after that, well. There is not much you can do with the peoples doing that

reply

All pedestrian gates should be closing gates, this open to the rail gate is a deathtrap and a cheap option. Studies show that with distraction the human mind can book out everything around it while concentrating. The one thing the mind can't block out is a barrier in front of the person. Half-ass gates cost lives, spend money, which won't happen under Luxon 7 houses but lives appear not to matter to him.
reply

I wonder what in their minds makes them not want to wait. the humans common knowledge capacity has to be limited because there is no way people would rather risk their life just to cross an incoming train on a track. you cant blame a train conductor at all since they can only move the train forwards or back. they cant just stop right away. i never blame the conductors in these situations.
reply

This happens so much where I live, the people don't take their safety seriously whatsoever. No wonder why the conductors quit so regularly. A cousin of mine gave it 3 strikes before he quit, the last strike included a baby, a car crash. You have a literal baby on board. & choose to ignore the flashing lights, the bar, the loud noise & decide to chance it! People are so. UGHHH
reply

remember it's not the one who will crash with the train is the victim
the people driving the train will always undergo with trauma after that.
because a train has a single track that will only go forward/backward.
you can literally just wait a few minutes to let it pass.
please always choose a minute of waiting over an accident

reply

Lets just say it like this. There are 2 good outcomes when you get hit by a train.
The first one is that the train was slow enough to stop just in time only barely hitting you.
The second one is getting killed instantly by a high speed train.
Lets just say that if you survive a high speed collision, you would wish you were dead.

reply

I appreciate the call for better safety here, but I gotta ask about the other kinds of engineers who design these crossings into stations like thiswhy aren’t these grade separated so that this is never this big of a problem An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of PSAs to make distracted pedestrians pay attention.
reply

Even on roads I wait for there to be no traffic at all before I cross and stand back a lot from the road even if it takes a couple of minutes I am very cautious lol. I haven’t witnessed anything bad at all just in the last few years I have become very cautious about crossings and crossing the road lol idk why
reply

This has made me reflect on how often I j-walk in front of speeding traffic on busy roads, I've thought in the past about how it could make drivers anxious but like the person said in the video it's a split second decision I've always made and I didn't think about how it could effect others in the moment.
reply

Bro who tf are these people playing chicken with a train. How hard is it to just wait a few seconds instead of risking their life, risking inflicting pain and suffering on their family, friends, bystanders, driver, etc. How can you be so selfish as to risk everything on being a few seconds earlier.
reply

So terriyfing but such a great idea. Death is such a foreign concept to many people since most have a very safe and sheltered life - they dont think they could ever get hurt or killed, so to get the message through to them u have to bring them as close as possible to their own mortality.
reply

I've spoken to people who do this about it. They have two basic arguments, I’m only putting myself in danger. and Everything in life is a risk, if you don't take risks you will never do anything.
The first seems very selfish and the second seems to ignore the level of risk.

reply

Where is the ramp In my country there IS a ramp but it doesnt work so these things happen, when someone gets killed, state makes him guilty of crossing, but it isnt working! I thought NZ is smarter, instead of my country serbia, which is poor and unsafe for those things
