The F125, also called the -Spirit-, is a diesel-electric passenger locomotive built by Electro-motive Diesel. EMD is owned by Caterpillar as part of a subsidiary company called Progress Rail. These locomotives are capable of reaching a top speed in service of 125 miles per hour and can put out 4, 000 horsepower. Power for the locomotive-s AC traction motors is generated by a 20 cylinder Caterpillar engine. The F125 was designed to meet the Environmental Protection Agency-s stringent -Tier 4- diesel emissions standards. As of late 2018, the Los Angeles area commuter service Metrolink is the only railroad to purchase the F125 with an order for 40 units. Metrolink plans on using the F125s to replace all of its F59PH and F59PHI locomotives. The prime movers in the retired locomotives will be scrapped, a requirement made by the funding grant Metrolink received to purchase the new locomotives. F125s first began arriving in Los Angeles for Metrolink service in the summer of 2016, but the new locomotives did not begin to enter regular service until late 2017. Let-s take a look at a number of F125 locomotives pulling and pushing trains in Los Angeles and Orange County

Cool video man! So far I enjoy catching these new locomotives on one of my favorite commuter railroads and they look pretty nice and clean, but I wish they had a better musical horn like the K5LA or something else than the K2. but either way they're cool and I know I always love the F59s but maybe over time I will soon like the F125 more. it depends on how I see it. Also if are moving does that mean you are leaving the state of California and heading to Oregon or Washington states? I know you said once you move you will be closer to Canada but let me know if I'm right or wrong. thanks again man. :) +CoasterFan2105

Dear Friend:
I am a fan of the railroads and I am going to travel to the United States in the month of June next. I will visit the cities of Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco and possibly San Diego. I need to know what routes it recommends to do, either between cities or urban systems, such as trams in different cities. Which route recommends me to do with beautiful views.
Thank you very much and I greet you

It is too bad for metro link to get of its f59s. They are a very reliable locomotive for commuter trains. Also Metrolink is changing its painting designs on its equipment too. You may not that Metrolink older passenger cars and locomotives are painted white with blue stripes while its newer passenger cars and locomotives are painted silver with waves of teal green lines.

2: 39 VERY disappointed to see black smoke coming out of the EMD F125. Also, it's noisier than the Siemens SC-44. I thought these were supposed to be -clean- locomotives. The SC-44 is clearly better! Now I know why Siemens sells many trains globally whereas EMD is struggling. EMD is just General Motors/General Electric junk! German engineering!

Actually, the F125-s can produce 4, 700 horsepower, but 1, 500 of that horsepower is devoted topowering the HEP generator. What strikes me is that the newer low-emissions passenger diesels that are running today (MP54AC, F125, Siemens Charger, and ALP45DP, although Dual Mode) do not have a 2nd Diesel engine for HEP control.

And they come equipped with K2s rather than P2s. Fun fact, if you watch old Metrolink fouled P2 videos from about 10 years ago, you will notice the similarities between a fouled P2 and the now used K2s, unless Metrolinks old Bombardier cab cars were already testing out K2s at the time.

I prefer metrolink's new locomotives over amtrak's. They look just look bulkier and stronger to me. Gonna miss both the f59phi and the p42, but I'm sure the new equipment will improve emissions and efficiency by a fair margin, so at least the replacement is for a good reason.

Hey Mike, since those ex-F40PH NPCU's on Amtrak Cascades have a green and brown paint scheme, I wish some F40PH's on the Surfliner could keep their blue and white paint scheme while being converted into an NPCU to match the bilevel cars. What do you think, Mike?

The F125 and the Charger will serve SoCal well the next several decades, I love their faster acceleration and quietness. I'm gonna miss the bass produced by the F59's though. There's something soothing about the soft boom boom boom mix with the chuga chuga.

I work at Metrolink-s Central Maintenance Facility in CypressPark CA and I get to see the awesome EMD F125 in action everyday. Truly an awesome sight to see day in and day out. I even got to meet EMD-s Chief designers for the F125 he-s a great guy.
