You know I have kind of gotten over the F59PHI's. I mean I still like the F59s. Ever since I got on the Surfliner with an SC-44 I started to like the SC-44 more the F59. I mean Hey! At least there are still being used in Chicago in Metra. Also, they are saving the Environment by Purchasing these new engines where like the F59 was just pure diesel and caused a lot of harm to other people like causing cancer, causes global warming, coughs, headaches, lightheaded, nausea and nitrogen oxides. (I had researched this Information. Al least Amtrak is trying to help the environment from pollution. I dont mind the SC-44 because once you get on a Surfliner with the SC-44 you begin to really start liking those new engines. The really cool thing is at night time you can really see inside the engine threw that big vent on both sides of the engine. Yes, the horns sound funny. Solution: Get used to hearing them because they wont be going away for a long time. Just like the F59s, they were here for about 20 years. I mean people could have cared less and we all would have been suffering. But its a good thing people do care because now some companies are helping Unlike METRA. I remember I had watched a video I'm not sure if it was from Coaster or Spencer but they say that Amtrak and some other companies had signed some paper to get rid off around 90%of pollution or something like that. Honestly I feel like they should have taken the Engine from the old F59Phi and put in the SC-44 Engine. That way we wont have to miss them that much. But Amtrak decided to get a completely new design. We will always Remember the F59Phi's. Even though they are used on the Metra line in Chicago.

Hey Mike, in early 2018, Metra collaborated with Amtrak to use Cascades and Surfliner F59's as a replacement for their older F40's. The F59 fleet will continue to be used for Metra commuter service following their retirement from Amtrak. The first 5 will keep their original Surfliner paint scheme, the next 16 will get their new Metra paint scheme. These locos will reduce pollution on Metra commuter service. F59's are still used on service for Amtrak San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor. I know it's unpleasant to see them leave, but it will reduce polution as they enter Metra service. By the way, before making their way over to Metra, the F59PHI's got their mechanical bells replaced with E-bells. They were used on the Surfline between 1998 and 2018. Now the SC-44 will take over for the next 20 years.

That spoiler) on the tail of the charger was obviously designed to make them more aerodynamic in combination with the Surfliner coaches, but it makes things worse when one of these locomotives is in front of a single-level coach or another locomotive (including another Charger when they are running tandem instead of back-to-back) -- and this seems to be the case an awful lot of the time. They should have made the spoiler be something that could be raised and lowered, or at least removed quickly. Fortunately, although all of the ones in this video have this feature, not all Chargers (not even all of the ones used by Amtrak) have it (although I'm not sure that Amtrak actually owns the ones used on the Cascades -- at least some of them have the WSDOT logo on them instead of Amtrak.

During the nine years I'd lived in Fresno, when I'd come up to Sacramento to see family and friends, I'd pass the Siemens plant on the UP line, with that being my first indications I was in Sacramento proper. I haven't been through there since they started production of the ACS-64 and SC-44, but I've seen a few of them come through my hometown of North Highlands, being towed by UP locos. Saw some MARC SC-44s and some SEPTA ACS-64s being towed on their way east, but couldn't get pics in time.

Amazing, professionally done trainspotting! Surfliners by the surf, what could be more ideal, right? I do believe a good choice was made with Siemens, considering the Chargers and the AC 64 S locomotives. These acceptance runs are a unique opportunity to film some rare consists, as it seems. Well done, Mike! p

I prefer the look of the Genesis locomotive much more. I wish they made a Charger in a Genesis body, that would be a perfect locomotive, because the Charger looks like a toy compared to the beautiful beast of a locomotive Genesis. In about 10 years we probably won't see Genesis locomotives anymore.

These engines were given a bad reputation that it barely recovered from. All started with that high speed crash just outside Tacoma. Amtrak should learn that NO locomotive design will EVER be perfect. Who-s to say that another accident with the Siemens Charger won-t happen again?

New Charger Locomotive. Is this so the old San Diego Charger fans won't feel so bad taking the train to see the Los Angles Chargers? ----Boy did San Diego blow it when they let the Chargers go!
Long live Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Chuck Muncie & Jack Murphy stadium!

I just rode the surfliner on December 2, and it was straight out of the 1970s. Rickety! And we were unable to take the train we were scheduled to take because of brake problems. We had to wait 3 hours for the next train, which was PACKED! Strictly third world.
