The Dash-8 is a series of freight locomotives built by General Electric in the 1980s and early 1990s. These locomotives have worked hard all over North America for over 30 years and are finally starting to be retired by most freight railroads. BNSF had a large fleet of these locomotives that came from the Santa Fe Railroad as part of the BNSF merger in 1995. These included several B40-8 locomotives. The B40-8s were the last new standard cab (narrow nose) units built by GE for the Santa Fe Railroad, constructed in 1988. Fast forward to the year 2020, all but two of these locomotives have been retired by the BNSF. The last two units, BNSF 563 (ATSF 7413) and BNSF 570 (ATSF 7420) continued on in short haul manifest and local service with 563 based in the Pacific Northwest and 570 in the Midwest. During the summer of 2020, the 563 spent much of its time hauling manifest freight trains between Everett and Custer, Washington as well as in between Everett and Longview Junction. Finally, after 32 years of service, the 563 was finally sidelined in late August of 2020 and sent east for storage in Minnesota, pending final disposition. In this video, we will watch the 563 during its last days of service on the BNSF. The focus will be on the greater Bellingham area, but we will also see the locomotive on an Everett to Longview Junction manifest. We will also see wide cab B40-8W number 505 prior to its removal from service and storage in late May of 2020

563 is in great shape and LUGO. -Layed-up good order-. no mechanical issues, and she has PTC. doesn-t make any sense to put her in storage, especially since the railroad is in short supply of locomotives. She-s not for sale, and hasn-t been taken off the roster, so perhaps she-ll just sit idle until they figure out they need her again.
563 was on the SPUD local in Wenatchee last winter/spring. My hog and I got to bring her back west over the cascades, not leading, but for power to get over the mountains on a Q train. It-s still a very strong engine, not worn out yet.
The 505 is still on the roster as well. Last I checked, she had a bad turbo and is slated for repair. 505 is not in as good as shape however, she-s tired. Trucks are worn out, everything in the cab is worn out, engine is tired. but she-s still got some life in her. They need to fix her.

Nooooooo I saw this at Murray Yard about a year ago and didn't have my camera and missed my one chance to get a picture or video of it: ( I might've got it in one of my videos somewhere though Idk. I read the description and it said BNSF 563 was sidelined so BNSF 570 might still be in service and it runs in the Midwest where I live (hence my username) so I might still have time to somehow find it for one final time.

- 4: 07 it appears 563 is doing Jingle Bells on the bell rather than the horn. - With all the modern power coming into the picture, you really come to appreciate the old school power that roams around out there. Something I'm always kicking myself about because I seem to have taken a lot of old school power for granted, only to find out right before or oftentimes after the fact that they're all gone.

I don't have anything else to say but it's time for to retire because I am so old as you can tell my H1 paint is more lighter I still use my Leslie RS3L Horn, and I hope you enjoy yourselves bnsf engines! -

I'm certain these will be good units for smaller lines. Pan-Am could snag a few, my question is what BNSF will do with their Dash-9s. Some of them are being rebuilt into AC44C4Ms but the rest? Could be useful for a class II, maybe WSOR can get some to spice up the SD40-scape its current roster is, lol.

Most of the b40-8 and b40-8ws are in storage in Galveston to waiting for scrap with other Ex SF and BN SD45-2s and -2Bs, SDP40s old SWs executive macs and SD75s however 570 and 563 aren-t there, but they aren-t the only ones not in Galveston BNSF 578 is on a dead track in north yard Saginaw tx.

I was lucky enough to see BNSF 556 and 503 work at Commerce, CA for months they had awesome sounding rs3l-s but unfortunately BNSF took them back to Barstow about 4 months ago which I caught them on the LACBAR through Commerce.

I used to see the ATSF GE 8-40 's and the EMD GP-60's and 60B's run through Devore on the way up of down from Cajon Pass. Those were the backbone of the ATSF Fast Intermodal service from LA to Chicago. They did render great service.

I thought the future was going to be good, but all it is for me. is just hell, every locomotive retiring, and I always keep missing out, because my family is just low on money. I wished I was born in the 1970s.

Wow, what's up with those B Units (cabless locomotives? I thought other than those old chopped down ALCO that Conrail had back in the day, the only B Units were the old EMD F and some old Alco locomotives.
