BBC News Review: Beckham's email hacked
video description
Hi, I'm Neil joining me today is Catherine. Hi Catherine? Hi, Neil?
What is our story today?
Story Neil today is about E-mail and very angry famous former foot baller.
Wow angry and fomous former foot baller and emails
Let's find out more some from this BBC report.
So, Davide David Beckham, the incredibly fomous former footballer is in the headlines at the moment and this is because his email has been hacked
now in the united kingdom as in many other countries
there is honor system which rewards people for good work or chritable work
and you will maybe heard of people like ( ) and sir Paul Mccartney
and David Beckham isn't sir David Beckham , he hasn't , which is another way of ,
he hasn't got a knighthood and it seems according to the hacked email that have been reported in various news papers that he was very very very angry
that he hasn't been given knighthood.
yes, extremely angry according to the report.
and you've been looking at the story online and chosen three words which keep coming up that we need to use to talk about the story.
yup! we have leak, black mail and fury
leak, black mail, and fury
so starting with leak ,what's your first headline?
ok, let's go to the Sun. and headline here is
Bouncing BECK beckhams attempt to move on from email leak with image of David hugging little Harber.
now Harber little harber is David Beckham's daughter.
the headline here is telling us that the BEckham has allowed that Daivd Beckham to be photographed cudding his daughter at breakfast
and they're saying that the reason is images have been published
is because Beckham wants people to stop talking about the emails and the leak.
so, Leak meaning making private information known to the public.
yeah, absolutely , and if we go straight to the literal meaning of leak
leak means that something escapes from its containers.
for example if you have a bottle of water and at a bottom of the bottle there is a little hole. and water is escaping drip by drip that's leak.
yeah, lequid or gas coming out of its contaners or pipes
yes. and point is you don't want it to escape
so we move to this meanig , someone has got some private information about David Beckham ,somebody apparently has accessed this information
and has let it out into the public domain and that's called a leak
and you can use it as a verb to leak,
and difference between that kinda leak and liquid or gas leak
is that is a deliberately act , isn't it?
yes, it's often done because either somebody try to cause trouble for someone
or because they have a feeling that actually it's important that this private information actually should become public.
yeah, so well known recent example , Adward Snowden ,US intelligent agent ,who decided that information that he had seen ,he thought it should become public.
because he thought that it's too important to remain private
and he leaked that information ,he leaked it to the world
via website called Wiki leaks
what is our next headline?
ok, so we are now looking in the Telegraph. the headline here is
Revealed:Hackers tried to blackmail David Beckham for 1m pound to avoid embarrassing email leak.
ok, blackmail meaning get money from or make demand on someone by threatening to reveal their screets.
yes, exactly. so blackmail can be verb or noun. and always very very negative
and it means basically, for example , you have some information about somebody
you know that they don't want anyone to know about it, you make them pay you
or possibly do something for you so that you will keep that information private
and if you stop paying ,you stop doing whatever they want you to do
they will make that information public they will leak that information
and that's exactly what these hackers did apparently they had to do Backham
they wanted a certain amount of money not to reveal the content of emails.
and Bcekham decided not to pay that money so the infomation actually come out.
that's what the stories are saying yeah.
it's often crime ,most of the contries in the world blackmail is criminal offence.
especially when it involves a lot of money ,but we can use it formal or informal way
yeah, it's not necessirily high profile ,always high profile people. is it?
no, anyone can blackmail anyone ,if you've got the information, like the photographs for the christmas party , Neil.
you're not supposed to mention the photographs for christmas party.
because I pay you 200 pound a week.
but you missed payment, Neil. so pay it before the photos go online
I can't believe, blackmail live on the BBC.
and of course we're just joking about that.
ok , moving on to the next headline
ok ,so, we have now ,what do we have, Star
David Beckham sent knighthood fury emails in 'heat fo the moment'
ok fury meaning great ,extreme anger,
yes, yes , the adjective being furious
and it's extreme adjectives and extreme verb
and it means really really high levels of anger.
it's nice short word ,very dramatic
and that's why headline like it.
fury is much more dramatic and shorter than anger
yeah, you see the fury quite a lot particulary in Tabloid news paper.
yeah.
because it is dramatic.
probably the truth of the matter with lots of the fury
that we hear about in the headlines is that person was angry.
fury sounds better.
because in real life ,if you want to apply the word fury
it would have to be being that the person have a red face
shouting out of control
and that's often where we use fury in everyday speech.
we use it as a sort of adverb ( )
so you can say that somebody was red with fury (not sure with a fury or other word )
or he exploded in fury
so you do things in fury or with fury as often the way you use it in everyday life
so when you were last red in fury , Neil?
do you what? I thought you might ask me that.
and I thought I'd become furious if you did, but I haven't .
I save my fury , save your fury. after recording

This is well done, although I think you should consider uploading subtitles for future videos as it would help learners check their understanding of what is being said.
