To me the Mongol Empire seemed more an expanding protection racket than an expanding empire. Tribute was what they were after. Hand over the money or we destroy you. The Romans conquered and taxed, but also replaced and romanized. Gaul and Dacia are examples. Dacians were depopulated and replaced by Trajan. Ceasar fought a 7 year war in Gaul where the Gauls made a final concentrated defense at Alesia and were fenced in an starved. While the French think they are Gaulic, they are as much decendents of Romans. Who killed or enslaved the men, and took gaulic women as wives.

The Mongols were famous for being able to live off the land and build military equipment on the site of where they were invading, which was how they were able to penetrate so far into eastern Europe. Presumably, once they established a foothold in southern Japan, they could do the same and not rely on long supply lines across the ocean.
Also, Yuan is one syllable, pronounced like when but with a y sound at the start.

Fun fact, the Spanish Armada was wrecked by a storm before landing in Britain as well. The Anglican English proclaimed God blew, and they were scattered.
I am just saying if I had a nickel for every time an island nation and future global power was saved from a large invasion fleet by a storm and considered it a divine wind I'd have three nickels.

A lot of this just sorta boils down to the fact that naval invasions are much easier to defend against than their land-based counterparts and this is most especially true of any island nation centralised and developed enough to put up an organised resistance. Honestly it makes it all the more interesting when such invasions actually do work

I would have changed the map of Japan there. Hokkaido would not fall under direct Japanese rule until the late 19th century when the late Tokugawa Shogunate and succeeding Meiji Emperor extended control northward. So you should only depict the other three main islands: Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu. 01: 45

Would Struggle to Supply a large army the further they advanced
That's what the Confederates (and even Sherman) assumed about Grant at Vicksburg. While it's a myth that Grant completely cut loose from his supplies, he did find a way to keep his lines going well beyond expectations.

I'm curious ( I know somewhat how it went with the Portuguese in Japan ) why Romance-languages part of Europe didn't try invading Japan, but they did so with Philipines. Was that a military logistics issue, or more just that by that point Japan was already closed to the outside world

Now those of you with a keen knowledge of military strategy would know that the Mongol Method of mounted warfare wasn't very applicable at sea. as a horse slowly sinks and a snorkel moves left to right. Completely on-the-floor hilarious.

The composition of the Mongol army during the Mongol invasions was overwhelmingly made up of people from old China (Han people and Southern Song people) and Goryeo (Korea) rather than Mongolians
Only generals from Mongolia participated

Also, there was some sabotage carried out by the ship builders, who made the masts unstable in high winds, oh yes, and the Mongols were using quite a few river vessels with flat bottoms, not ideal for seagoing journeys.

The reason the Mongols were defeated was that the Mongols did not have horses to swim to Japan. History shows that the Mongols suffered the most defeats in places where horses could not reach. haha

In a game based on this incident, Mongol soldiers invade Tsushima, but in reality, it was Chinese and Koreans. They were the first to massacre Japanese people. The game company concealed this fact.

Unfortunately for the Japanese they let the idea that they’d defeated the Mongol invasion get to their heads because they tried the same thing in 1941 to the US, and look how that turned out.

Unlike the Chinese who fold down fast due to their innefective warriors, Mongols and Japanese are similar. They are both effective archers while riding a horse, and are battle tested.

Now I'm wanting a video on why Vietnam has successfully beaten so many armies trying to invade them. Bonus points if there's a Chariot Archer somewhere in the video.
