Some companies offer students or recent graduates what they call 'internships'. These are extended periods of work experience where someone can be working full-time without an actual contract and, in many cases, without even being paid. But does this mean some people on lower incomes can't afford to take up the opportunities it offers? We discuss the pros and cons of working for free. This week's question: Which is the oldest stock exchange in the world? Is it: A: Bombay B: New York C: Amsterdam Listen to the programme to find out the answer. Internship can be a very good opportunity to start the carrier, even though it will be not paid. Trainees can gain experience and learn everything on practice, besides they can establish new connections, which help in the future. If a trainee is highly motivated and interested in a company and has a sharp mind, they will be successful. I agree, that it can be very hard to work without getting a salary in such expensive cities like London. If someone doesnt have rich parents, they wouldnt be able to afford to work for free. I think, that it is a bit unfair. But maybe it can be reasonable to go for internship to another place, f.ex. to a small town or village, where life is not so expensive.

Good topic!! Hi everyone. I think, the paid or unpaid of the internship is depend on the situations, in my case when I was working as internship for 3 months, the company needed who was developing in admin to improve two problems of them, really they did not have time to looking to improve and for that reason I had received some money for my job. After that it was a better experience i had ever had and got easier another job.
Great points, you are explaining in this video like: create connections with people, get the first experience of work, and finally make easier to get into a career.
Bye for now! Thank you!

In Indonesia, if you want to get a higher status or a job it can be easier to contact your established connections at the company. But in fact, there are lots of companies too that open doors to everyone by announcing it on the jobs seeker website.

Hi, I think we all have to do internship before getting paid, because by this way the company can recognize who is the best for a job, and everyone will have an equal chance to improve their ability.

Good topic. There are also many internships where not only people are not payed but They have to pay for! I hope talking about the injustice and abuse in BBC as you do will make a change :)

The more poor you are the more difficult it can be to get a good job. It's unfair. It's not social justice. Why the government doesn't do anything about it?
