In which John Green teaches you about relations between the early English colonists and the native people the encountered in the New World. In short, these relations were poor. As soon as they arrived, the English were in conflict with the native people. At Jamestown, Captain John Smith briefly managed to get the colony on pretty solid footing with the local tribes, but it didn't last, and a long series of wars with the natives ensued. This pattern would continue in US history, with settlers pushing into native lands and pushing the inhabitants further west. In this episode, you'll learn about Wahunsunacawh (who the English called Powhatan, his daughter Pocahontas, King Philip's (aka Metacom) War, and the Mystic Massacre. By and large, the history of the Natives and the English was not a happy one, even Thanksgiving wasn't all it's cracked up to be. So as of like 30 minutes ago, this video may have possibly saved my life. I was at home and heard the door slam open and close while I was watching this for class. I had my neighbors come over to check cause my moms at the airport and my dad was thirty minutes away. Lately, there's been sightings of gang members in my area and one was caught a couple doors down with an AR-15. I called my neighbors and we didn't find anyone but we think if anyone did come in the sound of the video playing at full volume may have scared them off. So thanks John Green for helping me survive dual credit AND possibly scare away a robber.

Title is -English- yet Thought Bubble shows a version of the -Union Flag-. This version of the flag existed around this time but I thought it was for maritime purposes only. I understand that the terms -England-, -Great Britain-, and -United Kingdom- can be confusing for some of our overseas friends.

No trying to be -one on those guys- but I noticed used the term -indians- alot when you were referring to Natives Americans but anyway since lots of schools use your videos for education you should probably be careful when u call the natives Indians
reply

Native Americans managed to colonise huge territories in America before Europeans arrived. Europeans were just doing what came natural to the native Americans. Conquer or be conquered.

That must've been super hard for you my dude to see people burning to death. Probably put him off his dinner too

I hate hearing how the white man stole the land from the Indians. It's the way of the world. The weak subsume to the strong. It's natural selection.

Someone: now, what if we gave the children what they wanted by physically causing pain to the one boring and teaching them? John green: please no
reply

The English didn't have the union flag(British flag) as there was no UK of Great Britain then, they had the Cross of saint George, the English flag.

ok so. semi-seriousquestion. did J Smith advocate for natives in order to get laid? Or was getting native trim just a result of said advocacy?
