Disclaimer: This is very different than the usual Crash Course US History episode. In which John Green lists a whole lot of the battles of the US Civil War in seven and a half minutes. We get a lot of requests for military history, so we offer a list of battle names, with some commentary about outcomes, and lots of really interesting pictures. This is a but of a departure for Crash Course as we leave behind the world of thoughtful analysis and just list some facts. Don't worry though. We've already got our brains turned back on for next week. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum re

Though true a small percentage of history is taken by warfare it might be the most important part of it. The Royal Navy once consumed most of the UK-s budget, the Punic wars have decided the roots of nearly all of modern western vocabulary, and entire civilizations have faced destruction or prosperity as either a direct or indirect consequence of warfare.

How lame. The significance of certain military campaigns, like taking Vicksburg and cutting the Confederacy in two, or Sherman's March, devastating plantations and liberating slaves along the way, are certainly worth discussing. To say nothing of how Gettysburg, had the Confederacy won, could have forced the Union to sue for peace and split the nation.
