In which John Green, Hank Green, and Emily Graslie teach you about, well, everything. Big History is the history of everything. We're going to start with the Big Bang, take you right through all of history (recorded and otherwise, and even talk a little bit about the future. It is going to be awesome. In the awe-inspiring sense of the word awesome. In this episode, we walk you through the start of everything: The Big Bang. We'll look at how the universe unfolded at its very beginning, and how everything in the universe that we know today came into being. So that's kind of a big deal, right?

Planets and stars and any other individual things you choose to identify have a -beginning- and an -end-. That's easy to accept. However, the stuff that makes these things are ageless. Scientists like to teach us about many principles. One of these principles is that energy and matter can neither be created nor destroyed - they merely change their state. Planets are not created out of nothing.
There is no age to the -universe- its -age- is infinite, therefore trying to measure its age is futile. The -universe- has no limit to size, its size is infinite also. Trying to measure the size of the universe is equally futile. The bothersome concept here, for us, is the concept of infinity. That is a concept that is difficult to comprehend (as far as measuring goes. We humans love to measure things. Mathematicians and scientists take the measuring thing very seriously and that's okay! We benefit by their efforts. However, there are some things that simply can not be measured. It is difficult to swallow that pill.
Simply put the universe is infinite in size and age. It has always been and will go on forever. All of these claims on putting a number to the age or size of the universe is merely a gauge on how we perceive the world around us and how we choose to measure it. It's that simple. However, some very smart people don't want to hear that!
Math and science is always evolving! Scientists gain new perspectives over time and that's okay. Don't forget that the brightest minds of the day said that the earth was at the center of everything, the sun revolved around us; also, the sun and planets moved in orbits; at first these orbits were described by the Greeks as being perfect circles; one last -known- fact was that the Earth was flat. Well, that was the -truth- advocated by the guardians of truth millennia ago, the mathematicians, scientists and philosophers -- really smart people that we believed in. Well, we -know better- today. The Earth in not at the center, planetary orbits are not perfect circles and the Earth is not flat! We -KNOW- that now. How will science and math have evolved 10, 20, 100 years from now?
Well, we will eventually catch up. Someone will come up with a reason to question the age of the universe. My gut feeling is that our understanding about the properties of light and magnetism and gravity will be -updated-. The first step will be to revise the -age- of the universe. Well, it's a start! But, in reality the concept of -infinity- is something we either choose to ignore or something we simply don't understand. Regardless, it exists!
-Origins of the Universe- that is a false premise. The Big Bang THEORY is also a false premise. There is no -start- to time. Time is infinite in duration. Contraditions are very annoying!

CAREFUL! you should NEVER say what you say around 13' that 10-20 years from now, Big History could look VERY different! this is factually false and very misleading, and helps crazies promote anti-science by arguing that this proves science is bogus and always changing so why trust vaccines, the round earth etc? only God is unchanging and worthy of being followed! so what should be said? something accurate which solves that antiscience interpretation, that Big History will have a better resolution, more details, a larger framework! but please, i beg you, stop promoting this crazy antiscience meme that -science will be totally different in the near future-! Just as Newton was not made totally wrong by Einstein, but just extended, future science will not invalidate what we know is true today, but will extend and refine it! You may think this is a minor point, but its not, its the largest weak spot of all science vulgarizers! Who unwittingly give ammunition to the anti science folks and cults out there!

Videos like this shake me to the core. They make you feel like you are beyond nothing and nothing beyond that. And I say that with nothing but humility not negativity. 13. 8 billion years ago? An atom sized beginning? The universe itself will one day die? ---- Thanks John and Hank.

This has nothing to do with the video but I saw an add that said trees are the key to beating climate change. Although trees are important to keep around, to beat climate cahnge we must take care of our oceans and stop dumping oil and trash into them. Go green!

i've read all of john green's books. since fifth grade (I'm in 8th rn) I have read his books. just now, I realized that this man and the author are the same person. he provided entertainment and made sure I passed my science tests dang!

Oh shoot that confused me a second! I was like yeah he looks like Hank but he doesn't at the same time! That is Hank's brother John I was talking about. I've never seen him on Crash Course before so he's a new face to me.

I see why you can only do the whole -this is nuts- occasionally due to others thinking your insane for finding the most normal aspects of the universe to find it extra ordinary that it exists

How old is the universe? -
Explain what the -Big Bang- theory is. -
What is red shift? -
Why is red shift so important in explaining time and space in the universe?
