On this Crash Course in World Mythology, Mike Rugnetta is teaching you about floods and deluges, specifically in China. In Chinese myth, flood stories pretty much all revolve around a guy named Yu the Great, or Yu the Engineer. In the distant past, he was tasked with stopping the flooding on the Yangtze and Yellow rivers, and he did it. After working on the job for 13 years. Yu also founded the legendary Xia Dynasty. Yu exists as a sort of model for future emperors. He works tirelessly on behalf of his people, and always does the right thing. He's a good emperor, and a model for rulers to emulate. He's also super cool, and can turn into a bear when he needs to dig really fast. Get a free trial of Adobe Creative Cloud!

Wrong drawing. The round hat/crown given to the Yu emperor in this video is a typical thing in the Qing Dynasties, which is from a complete different ethnic group (so not Han. Han got invaded by Nvzhen, just like by the Mongos, and from a completely different time (16-19 century. Whereas Yu is considered to be one of the ancestors of Han peeps, lived back in 3000 years ago. This crown is like drawing a Mongolian and call him Chinese: )

There is an interesting parallel between Yu disgusting his wife in -bear- form, and Noah being seen naked and drunk by his sons after the flood. His sons Ham laughs, and is cursed. In both cases, judgement upon the -naked- form of authority is cursed by the gods. God. Gods and Dragons. And Giants, and all the things.

This exposes a difference between Chinese and other civilizations in this whole flood myth: other civilizations just let it happen and let it go all controlled by a deity, while Chinese people actively tried to fix it regardless of the deity's will.

The job of Yu and his father (who actually was put to death for failing) was not to stop the flood. After the flood, whole valleys were filled with water and the job was to drain them.

The story about the flood and emperor Yu might in fact be historical. The research paper was published in Science magazine in 2016. (DOI: 10. 1126/science. aaf0842)

Who would win?
1: Noah made an ark to escape the flood.
2: A Chinese boi who gather people to build new water network to relief the flood.

yu - man conquers nature. Man conquers nature; he can move mountains; can move rivers. This moral is in contrast to the passivity of the Noah myth

Man, Id hate to be named Yu in an English speaking nation.
Everytime someone said -Hey you- or something similar it'd piss me off

From what I see, while reading Chinese myth, taking away those god related, and magic related part, the story seems so real.
