We visit Haslar, once the pride of the Royal Navy and the best hospital in the world, the Island of Montserrat, also named the Caribbean Pompeii, and the Island of Merasheen in Newfoundland, the first British colony in history. Everywhere we meet people who lived through the fall of the empire in their own ways and whose lives’ stories have been shaped by their longing for past glory but also the burdensome legacy passed down to them from the colonial era.
