The Machines That Built America: Black & Decker Produce the Next Wave of Power Tools (S1) - History Ejay: This is make-believe history, DeWalt was absolutely NOT '1 of 3 power tool industry leaders', they hardly made 'power tools' at all, they were a workshop focused company making radial-arm saws, none of these companies existed in the way they do today and there were MANY more players on the market which aren't around today. I also object to this 'Rosie the Riveter' myth continuing to be propagated as if the avg. American in the 40s would have a clue what you were talking about if you referred to women as 'Rosies'.
Furthermore it is laughable to assert that NiCad battery tools created some great revolution in the 60s, they only took over in the last 10 years as lithium batteries have allowed companies to offer so much more than before, no one had battery leafblowers and chainsaws in the 60s, 70s or 80s.

Nowadays, Black & Decker tools is nothing more than a cheap home owner's tool. Their cordless tools are underpowered, underwhelming and break easy. Though I can't speak for their corded stuff since no one wants a corded tool anymore. Milwaukee and DeWalt are on top of the food chain, I own a dozen Milwaukee tools and a few DeWalt tools, all are extremely reliable, strong, and durable.

I love all my Milwaukee cordless tools. Absolutely fantastic. Battery life is off the charts. I have used DeWalt. Just not the same, IMO. Sure, it is a personal bias, but it's based on years of using those tools. For my yard tools I go with Ryobi. Big fan of the 40V Expand It line.

I have a black and decker from the 90s, still runs today although the reverse switch doesn't make it reverse anymore. I use it specifically for mixing paint now, don't need a reverse for that just all that torque it has. Too bad their tools are cheap throwaway garbage now.

Back in the 1970's gas stations would give gifts after so many fill ups. The gift for me was a Black and Decker jigsaw. That saw still runs like new after all these years. That's the kind of products America should be making.

Black & Decker tools nowadays just break down. It's like they turned into ingco.
I replaced my old B&D drill for a bosh gsb 16 re and my god, the bosch completely outclasses the black & decker drills.

reply

i actually have 2 of those drills at 1: 05. one that size and the larger earth turning model.
i can't imagine how heavy the di cast model was as the two i have weight a tonne.

I don't like how american history/ science shows pulls in random ''experts'' to read info of a script constantly through out the episodes. Just have 1 background storyteller please.

I have a hard time believing black and decker is selling more but maybe. B&D are the by far the most crappiest tools ever! At one time they were good, but that ended a long time ago.

Every power tool I have is Batterie operated, from drill to chain saw to construction wireless radio speakers for music on the job & the same batteries fit everything.

It's kinda sad that Black & Decker went from being the company that drilled moon rocks to being a company that is regarded as cheap and no longer professional grade

Black & Decker-. once great tools, but now a name I associate with cheap appliances & bottom of the barrel junk.
Makita & Milwaukee lead the industry now.

Soo we are pretending pneumatic tools didnt win ww2? You showed rosie the riveter but left out Chicago Pneumatic? This is a sales advertisement. not history
reply

Stopped watching after they lied about the telephone and didn't give enough credit to international inventors. The show about titans on Netflix was better
reply

I get its a black and decker doc, so theyre gonna hype them up, but they are horrible lol and they havnt been one if the top 3 --- makita, porter cable
reply

The old Sozzles (Sawzall) needed dosing with 151 proof rum to get interested in working.
Modern ones just need half a bottle of Captain Morgan!

reply

Next generation of power tools will obviously be freakin lasers, short beams that you can custom measure, and with one press slice right thru
reply

Nowadays in reality there's only two brands, Stanley Black & Decker who own DeWalt & Techtronics Industries who own Milwaukee, AEG & Ryobi.
reply

This is a really interesting documentary, but it would be a lot less annoying without the reality show soundtrack constantly blaring.
reply

Makita actually came up with the cordless drill and black and decker is no longer a successful brand. Milwaukee has far surpassed them.
