Magnetic, Electric Fields & EM Waves: History and Physics
video description
The so called lines of force is steady and is directed from N to S, be it the same magnet ( on the outside) or between two magnets' opposite pole facing each other. And with regard to the same poles the lines of force are not directed.
So what is wrong with this picture?
Is the S pulling on N? or whatever. Or in reality they are both pulling on each other or who knows?
And here is an actual fact from observation unless I am not interpreting what I am observing correctly. The lines of force seem to exert equal and opposite pulling force, each magnet on the other. This translates as if no force exist at the center point. But there is force.
In that middle no man's land the force is equal and opposite, that is equal pulling force away from the other pole. Both poles are pulling on each other.
If you place a solid metal rod with its length along/parallel N -S between the two separate magnet, call it X axis, the rod becomes magnetised.
If you then place the metal rod at Y axis in that center point, it becomes demagnetised. At Z axis, basically same and depending on its length, you have to move the rod while doing this. And if the rod is too thick in diameter, the demag would not be as effective as one can understand why.
I barely graduated from high school. This simple basic fact is not mentioned anywhere. I have neither read it anywhere nor has anyone clearly shows this. It is spoken off in indirect way in other contexts.
And one more point since this is part of this topic.
EM waves do not need medium to propagate. So false, it mind boggling.
What on earth is permitivity and permeability of so called empty is?
If such thing did not exist everywhere, no propagation will happen.
I guess EM waves have medium after all. Perhaps they should have clearly fixed this long long ago. And they never did. So they still repeat the no medium mantra everywhere and confuse the heck of the new comers. Not understanding and not realizing what this did to their fragile brain, they quit school as thing piled one on top of the other.
And while they were at it, they should have clearly mentioned that photon is not energy, EM waves of any kind is not energy. Wave is a shape, like straight line or circles. They don't move nor are they energy. It is just a shape.
Water does not move, Waves on it does not move. Energy moves.
EM waves are not energy. They are the a shape, a pattern in which energy moves. You can't see energy.
Energy is the ultimate abstract, the ultimate unknown. Yet it is what it is all about.
At best it is numerical value we have assigned and nothing more, yet it exists. Oh no.

As someone with an elec engr degree and physics background I wondered what exactly was causing the 'quench' of the DC current in the transformer secondary winding - this regards your discussion of Faraday's transformer at time 4: 00 in the video.
Because if you think about it, why should the secondary winding of a transformer react briefly from a DC current flow in the primary winding, but then become 'quenched', ie. drop to zero current/B field, meanwhile the current and magnetic field in the primary winding - have not gone away.
1) DC supply to the primary winding is switched on
2) magnetic field around the primary winding becomes manifest
3) a 'polarization shock wave' of the dipole constituents of the Vacuum in the immediate vicinity of the primary winding occurs at the moment the DC is switched on
4) the polarization shock wave reaches the secondary winding and aligns electron spins and produces current flow
5) the vast majority of the dipole constituents of the Vacuum are randomly aligned, normally. The temporary local condition (ie. in close proximity to the powered primary winding) of aligned dipole constituents of the Vacuum is de-cohered by this vast majority.
Analogy - a small torch is lit underwater. The temporary local condition of heated water in the immediate vicinity of the torch is quenched, or 'de-cohered', quickly because the vast majority of the adjacent water is not hot.
It is our belief that the Exchange interaction is responsible for the magnetic field around a conductor.
In general, the Exchange Interaction utilizes electron (or proton) spin to sustain the lowest Coulomb energy distance between charged particles. The Exchange Interaction is Nature's way of saying I don't like aligned spins of charged particles - I prefer randomly aligned spins to achieve a lowest-energy equilibrium - but I dislike close proximity of charged particles and the greater energy caused by Coulomb force even less - so I will align spins in order to sustain a greater distance between charged particles - Nature prefers the following priority in its attempt to achieve a lowest possible local energy condition among a group of particles:
1) lowest energy condition: charged particles not close to each other, spins not aligned
2) failing that, aligned electron (or proton) spins to keep the charged particles separated to minimize Coulomb force
The awareness of polarizable dipoles as the constituents of the Vacuum has helped us in our study of the production of artificial gravity.

The problem with 'abandoning the ether' is this:
1) a time-varying, polarized electric field cannot exist unless there is 'something' that can be polarized.
2) the 'something' must be a dipole since electromagnetic (EM) waves (light, radio waves, xrays, gamma rays) take on both positive and negative polarizations as they propagate through space
3) a time-varying, polarized magnetic field cannot exist unless there is 'something' likewise that polarizable in both North and South poles, ie. must be a magnetic dipole, since EM waves take on both north and south magnetic polarization as they propagate through space
There's no getting around it. CONCRETE EXAMPLE: the hydrogen and/or helium atoms in our Sun - their electrons produce the light waves that light up our daytime hours on Earth.
A) visible light spectrum frequency EM waves are created on the Sun
B) these EM waves propagate out into space
C) after the EM light waves have left the surface of the Sun, but have not yet reached the Earth, these EM waves are in the Vacuum - aka 'space', or the 'ether' - and their polarized fluctuating electric and magnetic fields require something physically tangible to manifest
These transverse EM light waves require dipoles that can manifest both polarizations of electric and magnetic fields.
The 'ether' must consist of dipoles. Most likely dipoles of particle-antiparticle pairs.
There is a conviction in QED that electrons and positrons 'pop into existence then quickly annihilate'
If this were true, there should be a noteworthy gamma ray background throughout space, since it is long-established that annihilation of an electron-positron pair creates gamma rays. There is no such gamma ray background.
It is possible that electron-positron pairs fill the Vacuum and are persistent, since such pairs are dipoles, and exposure to a radio antenna could induce a larger 'stretch' of this type of dipole, and the magnetic fields of EM waves could originate from the magnetic fields of the two particles.

Modern science doesn't really talk about this, but aether theories pass the same 11 tests that special relativity passes as well, which means that we have no experimental way to distinguish between an aether theory and a non-aether theory.
Modern science drops the aether because it requires one less _a priori, _ and they justify this via Occam's Razor; while Occam's razor is a good principle, it isn't always right (which should be obvious, so whether or not the aether exists is something that still hasn't been determined.
Also, the electromagnetic field is basically the aether in all but name. When I learned SR during my physics major, they made a point to say that the aether doesn't exist, or isn't necessary, but then went on to describe the electromagnetic field, which takes the place of the aether and does all the same things. It transmits the waves (so electromagnetic waves do need a medium to travel; that medium is the electromagnetic field.
The EM field only couples to charges, whence why it is the aehter in all but name.

Another great video and about one of my favorites, Faraday. And once again providing fodder for my radical ideas.
There is no such force or field unto itself that is gravity. Anybody who mentions gravity from the modern consensus is talking about something that does not exist. While there is an effect called gravity on earth, its mechanism and the forces behind it has never been understood. You must have come across the statement by faraday of wanting to develop an experiment to connect gravity with electricity. There is no means of detecting a force called gravity, unlike the electric and magnetic. And as for the gravitational constant goes, it is far from constant.
Is gravity a pull or a push force? I think there is far more relevancy to LeSage's model, though instead of ultramunadane corpuscles, consider electrons in a dielectric and diamagnetic environment, ie: the gasses of the troposphere.
cheers

Absolutely insightful. I had always suspected that Faraday was a true revolutionary and philosopher-scientist. We are equally fortunate to be blessed with the personage of James Clerk Maxwell to properly understand the nature of what Faraday had accomplished and especially provide the proof of the propagation of light as magneto-electric, that is, non-aetherial and therefore material, universal and atomic. The engineering which followed in harnessing the natural force of both the atom and electromagnetism I speculate would have been immeasurably delayed without them notwithstanding the contributions of all the Continental Science contained by their formulation of the connection between light, and the electromagnetic force being materially integral for discovery then also of the binding force within the atom and its constituency.

I enjoy your posts so much!
I am curious if any communications took place between Gauss and Faraday. I believe Weber did communicate with Maxwell, but it seems Maxwell did not understand Weber's publication. I think Maxwell later added to his initial publication an appendix, but I have never seen the apendix.
I know Gauss had made Weber aware of the necessity of time dependence in the retarded potentials. I also think Gauss had made this concern to his students and friends, but none of them appeared to take heed.
Maxwell's equations are missing the delayed potential issue. Weber's suggestions are made using euclidean geometry to format the geometry.
I would enjoy your comments on this issue.

Oh. I am already seeing the release of the video about Amperes Biography as an ideal for normal people, who like to study physics or electric equation. Not only, that we value his work on electrodynamics, but also his continous attempt to progress his understanding and scientifique endeavour.
As usual all of these videos are so helpful milestones to remember, access and appreciate the equation.
It is not a simple equation. It represents determination, work and humble humanity.
Whoever studies the origin of equation can then yield and also shape his own character thanks to the authors contribution and the following teachers passioniate work.

But what is the aether? Maxwell never could make that part work out, because it does not exist.
As far as Maxwell goes, he did nothing more than Ohm did with electric current, voltage and power, and worked out the math Faraday was not interested in.
If it had not been for Faraday, we would not know about the 'fields' created from the lines of force. And that the lines of force continue to travel well after the inverse square law says we should not be able to detect their presence.
And all of our sky at night would be dark, and we would not be able to see the infinite space of the universe!

Another excellent lesson! I think I am beginning to actually UNDERSTAND this stuff - and most of my working career was in electronics! Of course when I started in that, vacuum tubes were still widespread, transistors were new and big enough to hold and see, and integrated circuits were built on perfboard - again, using components you could hold and see. How times have changed in my 70+ years. Your videos are helping me actually understand the physics instead of just taking the effects as revealed truth. Thank you! And I am going to pre-order the book for my Kindle now.

This video is to me, the most understandable collection of information, explaining both electricity and force.
One which I have searched for, for many years, seriously.
I think it's the specific collection of ideas together in one place, and navigated with your unique historical POV style, that allowed my penny to pass the mechanism.
To analogize: Trying to understand how electricity propagates, is a walk across the desert, and this video transports me home, removes my boots, and soaks my feet.
Thank you.

Great to have a video devoted to the one of the greatest experimental scientist we ever had - who paved the way for most of the other physics/ chemistry discoveries possible within short period after his discoveries but not popular in the internet video creations.
Your's full of genuine information with all the proofs & convincing manner of presentation good example for the others not to make misinformed, fake, bogus & sensational effect videos that flourishing in the internet.

Faradays line of e force requires the vacuum space to possess Aether, having a measurable permittivity e0 of 8. 845181712810-12 Farad/meter.
Without Aether in our universe, displacement current would be impossible, neither B field, electromagnetic wave nor spectroscopy.
Sadly, by mistake, we chose to deny existence of Aether, forcing modern scientists scrambling to make ends meet with mathematical legislative physics.

What a great video, Kathy! I've known for a while about Maxwell's equations and permittivity/permissivity giving the speed of light and light being alternating electric/magnetic fields, but I had no idea that Faraday had thought-experimented the same AND didn't need the ether! And I love how you show the actual texts of Faraday's writings to show he really was thinking this.
