There is a novel/series known as the Eagles. In the second book the Romans invade Britannia and the Britons used slings to great effect, the Romans had to charge up a hill but the slingers rained hell on them breaking fingers and cracking skulls, the Romans ducked down behind their shield which allowed for other Britons to flank them, one of the Centurions inspired his men and led the charge towards the Britons. The Britons lost the battle but when the centurion looked down the hill he saw the broken bones, broken knees, missing eyes, missing fingers ect and men shouting in pain an agony both Roman and Britons, but the Britons would not be in pain for much longer.

Always a skeptic on the sling. Novels/histories keep recounting the sling as a fierce weapon. We had rock fights when we were kids. Nobody got killed. I need to see film of someone trained in the sling killing at least a horse, or some animal capable of movement and some intelligence, or else I just won't believe it. Yeah, I know. A miracle shot to the temple can kill one human. That is not a proper weapon of war, if you are counting on miracle shots.

I hope you all enjoy this little stray away from my original series on the Legions. Due to the much appreciated interest from your side, I decided to make a smaller series about the way the Legions operated, to make sure we are all on the same page as I continue my main series. I'll be making a couple more of these kinds of videos in the future. As for now, the story of the 14th Legion is next!

Clearly you haven't read about Dacians who were so tough, that it took a very long time for the Romans to conquer only part of them and at the end of it they dedicated several monuments to them one of them being Trojan's Column. Also the Dacians were so influential that one of the Rome's emperors was Dacian. Too many praises sang to the romans.

8: 00 That is something I didn't know. But totally makes sense. Fiberous rope and rocks. Cheapest effective weapon of them all. If I was planning a pre gunpowder army all my infantry would havs a standard sling and back of rocks. I would also get them a kestros sling and darts for them. Two different missiles for different use.

Imagine these incredible men, who probably knew they would not come back alive were actually almost not paid. Recently we found the salary of a Roman soldier. It was ridiculous and they spent everything on equipping themselves better (coats, and so on. What kind of passion, madness must you have to engage in such a life?

20 yr service! Wow! To be a retired legionnare must have been rare. To be a legionarre in their 40s back them has to be more beat up than any 20yr infantryman today. I know a few, and they sacrificed their bodies for this country. Cant imagine those old salts during the empire. Much more respect for them now.

Extraordinary claims require Extraordinary evidence Where is your TANGIBLE EVIDENCE to substantiate your claim of (Roman legion training procedures) is Factual? If you can NOT present TANGIBLE EVIDENCE to substantiate your claims are factual this is called (Hearsay/verbal story) inadmissible in a court of law.

Yeah sure. the Wop's were so Great that is why most of their biggest majority of front line trroop's were the Germanic auxiliary. How else did the Germanic people even know otherwise when the short ass Wop's departed from the land of Inglander's did the Germanic people know where the bloody hell it was?

Romans created a well-developed Training for army recruits. where Marathas from western part of India just recruited some random people(Just he should have spirit of fighting) and build their army. As a result, they defect world's wealthiest Empire in 17th century. Go and do a research.

Fascinating how the integrity of the training/ recruitment programs dwindled towards the end of the Roman Empire. This can also be seen in the demise of the US where the wrong people in power have been appointed and a complete lack of oversight destroys the nation from within

When's the bs about training with weapons that have double the weight will end? There's no benefit to it, getting used to a heavier weight won't magically make you better with the real tools, it's worse, since you now are not used to the real weight reducing accuracy.

2: 17 interestingly, many sources from the Middle Ages tend to describe good knights (good as in good at being knights, as tending to have that kind of shoulder to waist ratio. Not that weird when you think about it, I suppose.

Desirable 'feats'? The word 'feat' means 'achievement; exploit; courageous, daring act'. Is this Idiot Talk for 'feature' as sense would imply. If so this is a crime against the English language. Otherwise, great video!

So many experts on the Romans in this audience. if only there was some humility cuz you don't know what you don't know but hey it makes a good story right no need to research the truth just run with what they've spun

To anyone wondering 20 roman miles is about 29 596. 08 meters, they traveled this distance in around 5 hours of time. Meaning the speed was around 5. 919km/h(in retarded units-3, 67803mi/h. That's very impressive.

One thing that was not mentioned in talking about a stab vs a slash. It takes less room to make a stab than it does a slash. You can tighten your front line more if you are stabbing than if you are slashing.
reply

If Roman soldiers are so strong then why do they lost to the Germanic and the Goths. Keeps reinforce the loosing Roman fighting technique and not shed lights to others fighting skills is just one sided analogy
reply

Around 1: 46. people from the countryside wre preferred. this was NOT only because they were more used to hardships of life! It was also because perhaps 90-99% of the population lived in the countryside.
reply

It is believed that the fall of the roman empire was due to them straying from this strict level of military recruitment and training Damn I'm sure glad that isn't happening in another empire today.
