HOmer's Greek poems (illiad and odissey) shaped civilizations of the millennium before the Christ in the Mediterranean.
Virgil's Aeneid shaped (and added to the greek Homer's epic, the civilizations of Europe for the first millennium after Christ, especially with the contribution to the new religion: Christianity, since Virgil anticipated the Christian pietas.
Dante Alighieri, Tuscan poet, with his epic poem, the Divine Comedy, ( added to the other 3 epucs, and shaped our modern civilization of the last eight hundred years.
Surprisingly the video does not seem to understand the weight of the greatest epics of our civilization! : greek Homer, Latin roman Virgil and italian Dante Alighieri are the columns upon which all our modern civilization is based.
Understanding them, is to understand not only literature and religions and philosophies, but to comprehend our very nature as humans and as civilized people.

I've read this, or should I say attempted to read this several times. I've yet to finish it. It has its moments of great literature, but sadly long, long periods of heavy, heavy reading which makes it both a great story and incredibly boring. Should be given to those whom you wish to put off classics for life. Homer should be given to those you wish to inspire.

Why should we read Aeneid, because it's required if you want to pass a school year,
Why did Augustus want to publish Aeneid, because the epic is a cross between the odyssey and the Iliad with the main protagonist being portrait as Augustus himself says some specters.

By the way, there also is a ukrainian adaptation by Ivan Kotlyarevsky. Its like Aeneid but with cossacs, it is called the encyclopedia of ukrainian culture with depictions of food, clothes and many more things of the cossac period.

The Aeneid is not a true story. The Romans did not come from Troy. They came from Greece. They are a shoot from Sparta and Athen politicians. The Aeneid is just fantastic fantasy. I read it and it was boring for me.

The Aeneid is APPALLINGLY bad next to Greek epics. This was the consensus of the faculty at my classics department. Don't bother unless you're interested in historiographical study of literature.

This is a hard book to read. The language is difficult. If you're not a regular reader then I do not recommend it. Maybe I'm just not as smart as other people. lol
