Quai-Liang is -obviously- at his MK: D power level here, where he's -amped. By a lot. - Scorpion even putting up a fight against Old Man Shukinko back then is an insane feat when you look back. And we are witnessing Onaga's return prophecy unfolding in the background. It's very, -very- subtle but it is there. We are witnessing Quai-Liang proving himself capable of being chosen by the Elder Gods.
Quai-Liang also feels more like the main (mortal) protag than Raiden. Everywhere Scorpion goes you can find the Onaga breadcrumbs. This is literally taking place in front of Onaga's Army.
Plus c'mon, If you were up in The Heavens, watching all the MK1 events going down, and see this one -mortal- dude from Earthrealm almost single handedly stopping the horror show to come. You might go -Yep. This is our guy- when Onaga gets released.
We also know Liu Kang couldn't neutralize every threat, even prior to the events of MK1. Liu Kang's got some skeletons in the closet that even we as the audience aren't aware of. I personally believe he began going insane like Kronika, had a giant -show of force, - and probably being the instigating factor for this Shao's irrational level of hatred to Liu Kang. We know there are more Titans, and we also know Onaga's a -weapon of mass destruction- that is sealed away instead of killed. I personally believe Onaga will be a Titan. Probably a Titan of Death.
Yeah, we see Onaga as this chained up Kaiju in Reiko's ending, but for one, Reiko's an unreliable narrator and Shao's. Shao. More importantly, Onaga -cannot- be some mindless Kaiju, who can be -tamed. - That'd be an actual gut punch, for anyone who didn't play the 3D games, it would be just like Sindel being evil in MK11. It would be an insult to the character.

When I was a kid, I used to hate Sub-Zero because he killed Scorpion. However, I changed my mind when I found out he had a younger brother: Kuai Liang. Scorpion and Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang) were my two favorite characters when I was growing up. I thought it was awesome to see them become allies in the later Mortal Kombat games. Bi-Han did grow on me, eventually, but Kuai Liang is the better warrior. Seeing him as Scorpion in this game is a great change, but I still like Kuai as Sub-Zero. I look forward to the next game to see what they are going to do with his character.

Sub zero has always being my favorite character. I always pick him during the early MK games. And yes. I didn-t know back then about the brothers and though they were the same person lol, until MK3. Since then when I think of sub zero I think of Kuai Liang. While I-m gonna miss a good sub zero, Kuai Liang being Scorpion was really a big surprise

Bi-Han and Kuia Liang's rivarly makes much more sense than Hanzo's. Especially, the scar of MK1 Kuia Liang felt more personal.
The OG Sub Zero vs Scorpion doesnt even make sense to begin with just a victim of circumstance. Honestly, Liu Kang vs. Shang Tsung is the true rivarly of MK throughout the games.

Just wanna note, Liu Kang vs The Deadly Alliance atop the Pyramid of Argus is a mash up between the intros of the 3D Era trilogy. The spin kick to Quan-Chi? That's lifted from Raiden vs the Deadly Alliance. The snake is obvious. Even Zombie Liu Kang vs Shang Tsung movements are repeated.
