The sequel to American McGee's Alice, the cult classic 3D action platformer, is finally here. Can it live up to its cult classic predecessor's legacy? Is it still freaking bizarre in the most awesome of ways? Buy Alice here to help support LGR!

Although they have a story and objective, the reason people like a linear game comes down to the actual gameplay. Spiderman for thePS1 had the same formula. Crash Bandicoot had the same formula. People return to these games based on how fun they are to play. That said, a linear game is a one time interest. Compared to Pokemon at least pokemon gives us hundreds of hours of things to do within the main story. Before online multiplayer was popular, the main returning factory with a game was co op and vs comp maps. If a linear game doesnt have either these two, its doomed to be a limited interest. Thats why people like free roam, skyrim, spiderman ps2, Time splitters, Smashbros.

There really needs to be more games like this in this generation. It's all generic first person shooter this and annual open-world game that, and a whole lot of micro-transactions for good measure (I won't support games with micro-transactions by the way, I don't like where the industry seems to be headed. Sure there are some good 2D and 2. 5D platformers from indie studios, but 3rd person 3D platformers are sorely absent, save for Super Mario Odyssey. I discovered this game recently and it was a breath of fresh air. I played through the whole game, couldn't put it down. I loved the art style in particular. The game is flawed but enormously creative.

Thank you for this. Never played the original game, but had the sequel on Steam. After seeing this, I discovered that because EA didn't support Steam, the Steam release does not include the original version of the game. so after I finished watching, I had a quick Google and discovered that it is totally fixable - 1st result was Steam community page with clear instructions etc. So, I downloaded the relevant files for the original game, edited the Madness Returns config. ini to enable it and voila - works perfectly! Thank you for bringing this to my attention (not that you'll probably ever see this comment)

The first game was difficult, and it had more emphasis on the combat. This one could have had great combat, she had nice moves. But lack of enemy types and the combat being so easy made that only the platforming really stood out. And even this platforming is not that hard, and punishment for death is minimal, there are checkpoints everywhere. I got disappointed with the ending, because I really wished she was some kind of psycho, but ended up that her psychiatrist was. So the game tried so hard to be dark and stuff and came around to such a common ground. But indeed the game is very beautiful with great music.

Was trolling through some of LGR's older vids and just found this one. AM's Alice is still to this day one of the most beautiful and artistically original games out there. the mechanics were done to death but DONE EXTREMELY WELL (LGR isn't kidding about the controller being soooo much better) which it totally forgive the former for the latter. Soundtrack was amazing for a video game of it's time and I still go back and play this one every few years. I wish the steam version came with the original like the physical copy did. That is a BIG unfortunate letdown.

Just as an FYI, American is currently working on a third Alice. He is sharing concept art over en Patreon, hosts special guests during the weekly live streams (concept artist Alex Crowley and Chris Vrenna has already guested it, next up is Roger Jackson, produce awesome merch and goodies and invite fans to join in on the discussions about basically all aspects of the upcoming game! If that weren't enough, it is really one of the least toxic gaming communities EVER.

I do not know if i am not idealizing American McGee's Alice but it felt so much better!
I remeber playing it as a teen and feeling genuinely scared yet compelled to come back to it.
This feeling of weirdness and solitude was something unique. I wish i could play it again.
Alice: Madness Returns is not bad on its own but when i compare it with its predecessor I have just one thing that come to my mind: meh

This game became one of my all time favorites as soon as I started to play it XD it's just awesome!
I played it with mouse and keyboard and I must say you're exagerating a little bit too much about how's controlled. I found the sensibility and precisition of the mouse really usefull when fighting against hordes of enemies and the keyboard can be remapped at will to fit any kind of player.

I love this game
Its just a VERY weird game
Like. Its not like any other game ive ever played.
The characters are weird. The areas are weird. the sound track and puzzles are weird. Its just such a different game
I understand how it might not fit everyones taste. But even after so many years, its still my favorite game of all time

imo i thought the story was better in this one because the first one it was just 'queen takes over land while u were gone so kill her' but this one was a little more complex than that? especially since elements of her real world were included into the design of the villian and his actions i thought that was pretty cool
