What The Biggest Fans Never Knew About Home Improvement Jimvanhise: Actually Patricia Richardson said she'd only do a season 9 if she was paid as much per episode as Tim Allen was. Tim thought if doing another season was just going to just be about the money then he didn't want to bother. Patricia Richardson also wanted creative input and have her character's marriage to Tim have problems, not exactly the stuff of comedy. So Tim Allen walked away and the show ended. This video also doesn't mention the behind-the-scenes problems. After the show became a big hit in the first season, the management for the 3 child actors wanted to renegotiate their contracts and the producers considered recasting all three of them. Richard Karn gave an interview once in which he said that the producers were not nice to the three kids (perhaps out of resentment) and that this is one of the reasons that JTT walked away from the show because he was tired of the way the producers had treated him so he just left the show and didn't renew his contract. Some people also didn't care for the way Home Improvement changed in the later seasons, such as a story line where Tim's brother got divorced and they even did a very special episode where JTT's character was thought to have leukemia, but the test finally came back negative. Not a lot of fun there. Some refer to the early seasons as the early funny ones. A review in Entertainment Weekly late in the series run was by a writer who hadn't watch the show in a few years and was startled by how different it had become. They even killed off Jill's father and Al's mother in later episodes! They might have also mentioned that the show helped sell in syndication by not broadcasting one episode and making it available only in the syndication package (the one that took place at the 29 Palms Marine Base where Tim goes out of control in a tank and drives over things.

Completely left out the fact that the show within a show concept was completely different at the beginning. Ashley Judd's character was actually going to be an actress playing Tim's wife on a sitcom that Tim Taylor starred in. But the producers didn't think the audience was smart enough to comprehend the idea of a show within a show.

I remember reading something that it wasn't Allan that wanted the show to end Richardson decided she didn't want to do it anymore ABC even said that was fine that it could go on without her but he said if she wasn't gonna do it he wasn't. And like a year later he regretted not taking the offer and staying on a few more years.

Interesting that he did Home Improvement for 8 seasons, and ABC was desperate for a 9th. only to bring him back a few years later with Last Man Standing (a very similar show. Only to be canceled 5 years later and replaced by a show that could not get his ratings. Now he is going to Fox to do Last Man Standing for them.

Half Baked got started on Home Improvement? And why would Tim Allen question JTT like that? A lot of young kids at that age wanna do a little bit of everything, like the kid who leaves his boring town for the city just for a change or pace, or the kid who travels the world. It's at that age that they do most of that.

I freakin love Patricia Richardson. I was a kid when this was on and my mother always had to comment, the snob she is, how she wasn't pretty and she was cheap, i. e. common. I didn't like this. I think she's very pretty, she looks like she'd make a great mom, she's a classy woman. And a great actress.

Im actually glad that they called it quits when they did. Too many shows end up running far, far longer than they should, and wind up being dull and repetitive with nothing more to give. I remember this being one of the funniest shows ive seen, and im glad i get to remember it that way.

Patricia Richardson also appeared on Last Man Standing as cranky and cantankerous neighbor Helen. Home Improvement references abounded here too, and the character was even introduced doing some renovations to her house. Regular neighbor Chuck Larabee did a Wilson stand-in as well.

Jill was probably the worst character of the show. I'm rewatching this on Hulu right now and she legit is a terrible spouse. Who purposely sabotages someone's day to work on the car you're building with their friends by trying to hook up your best friend with your husband's friend?

Home Improvement was much funnier than Last Man Standing, IMO. Tim Allen's character itself, from one show to the next, was much less funny the second time around (also, Outdoor Man as secondary plotline was no match for Tool Time)
