On a serious note though, I think Joaquin has the potential to do an absolutely fantastic job, and I'm hoping that this is DC's answer to the complete and utter crap WB keeps letting Zack Synder crank out in the DCEU time and time again. It also makes me wonder if they're using the multi-verse to explore the multiple Joker theory, leaving Leto as the typical crime boss Joker and building Joaquin up to be the more familiar anarchist Joker.
My only objection is a solid and confirmed backstory for the Joker somewhat betrays the character's purpose. Joker is supposed to be the literal embodiment of chaos, and one of the major contributing factors to it is the fact that not even Batman could discover his true origins or his motives for becoming who he is, reinforcing the idea that Joker is more a living idea than he is a person, and the struggle against chaos is never ending and it can never die.
Even in what people considered to be one of the best Joker stories ever written, The Killing Joke, Joker waltzes Batman through a telling of his origin then concludes with the concerning yet sincere statement of Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes I remember another, I'm not sure which one is true! Haha. Of course, I could argue the same point over Tim Burton's Joker having a solid backstory, but the Tim Burton-verse Batman was always kind of an. fun oddity as opposed to authentic character representation.

This pic shows what Joaquin Phoenix's character will look and be like BEFORE an unexpected turn of events transforms him into a grotesque clown-like crime figure in Gotham City we most recognize as The Joker AKA The Clown Prince Of Crime. I'm thinking that in Joker, pre-Joker Arthur Fleck unsuccessfully tries his hand at comedy to support his pregnant wife. Fleck then gets involved with some bad people which causes the deaths of his wife and unborn child, a tragedy that pushes him over the edge along with society's rejection of him as a failed comedian. Then Fleck has a date with a vat of acid that holds his destiny and changes his life forever as he becomes disfigured by the acid. In the vat, Arthur Fleck has died but something else has just been born: a monster that will adopt the persona of an evil clown, the birth of The Joker, the likes of which Gotham City has never before seen. I'm also thinking that Joker, although driven insane by the turn of events that created him, will seek murderous revenge against those responsible for the murder of his wife and unborn child. Later, The Joker will put his past as an unsuccessful comedian behind him as he considers Arthur Fleck dead and embraces his destiny as The Clown Prince of Crime, a psychopathic murderer, whom will eventually be challenged by Batman for control of Gotham City's heart and soul.

Okay, DC needs to stop. The whole point of the Joker is you don't know what his origin story is. Yes, throughout the years there's been multiple ones thrown out there, but in the end no one knew which one might be real, and that's the great thing about Joker. He's so batshit (pun intended) insane that even HE probably doesn't know his own origin by this point. It's what makes him a great character. I have a very bad feeling that DC is going to, once again, completely destroy one of their most cherished properties by trying to compete with Marvel in the live-action genre. Not to mention I don't get a good Joker vibe off Phoenix. I'm not saying he won't do well with the character, but between this movie probably having very little actual Joker in it and the abomination that was Leto's Joker, let's just say I'm more than a bit gun shy when it comes to DC doing justice to this character in live action. Then again, there will always be only two perfect personifications of the Joker for me: Heath Ledger in live-action and Mark Hamill in animated.

I have noticed that it is fashionable to bash Letos joker to fit in. Say what you like about him but his joker is true to some of the comics. Hamills Joker was a gangster but he was watered down because it was a childrens programme. Heath Ledgers Joker was brilliant but part of that was due to his death and the mystery and theories surrounding it. That is why he won the Oscar. I love Ledgers Joker but I also love Letos Joker and want to see more; and thats ok! He was on screen for 7 mins or something so cut him some slack! Its hard to follow somebody who died and people forget that. There are 75yrs of source material no 2 Jokers are the same and that is what the character is supposed to be like. I hate this new film because it misses the point spectacularly Joker is an idea, an agent of chaos and not even batman knows who he is and thats how it should be!

idk i love this take but the idea that the killing joke is being removed from the main continuity of the DC cinematic universe. is a bad move IMO. part of what makes the batman comics so great for my perspective, were the writers ability to take small details turn them on their head. Turning them into strings that unravel a truth that only those who walked the path(followed the comics) could truly understand the depth of madness. i just hope the movie does leave a sore taste in my mouth, because they tried to take a gallon of water and shove it into a 16oz bottle. but it looks very intriguing none the less I'm hyped!

This is dope, I love all joker's, they all got their own persona. I like letos alot as well too because he's like a modern gangster. Older folks wouldn't really understand it but I do agree ledger had a way better performance with great screen time. I'm glad this will be separate because I still want to see letos work! But seeing Phoenix as this joker I'm very excited to see this! The R rated animation of this was terrific, I always wished these movies were darker and R rated, including real life possibilities instead of using things in the film that don't exist like future technology and shit lol

Heath Ledger Indeed did a Great job As The Joker - Thats No Secret. But, I admit, and In my Humble Opinion, I feel Much of the devotion to his Joker was Due to his Horrible & Unfortunate Death During Final Filming and That Added a lot to the Madness and sorrow of His particular Joker When the movie hit Theaters. That being said, Joaquin Could Actually be Really Good in My Opinion, He has a Lot of the Same Acting Characteristics as Ledger, Plus Joaquin has Played many odd or off the wall Roles in movies - hes excellent at being awkward, Great versatility.

His name in Jack Napier! He has a legit background and history not just whoever pops up acting crazy is the joker.
Jerome in the show Gotham WAS NOT the joker he was meant to seem like the joker but if you look at the timeline it was far off from when the joker was active. Jerome was a teenager and Jack Napier didnt become the joker until he was a grown man with a Family and job at Ace chemicals.

This is the first good Idea that DC has had for their franchise, and not only is it GOOD. It's absolutely Joker-ific! I'm not even a huge DC fan, but, done correctly, and they do have the PERFECT actor for this. Done correctly, any DC story can be good. See. DC are like Gods. Marvel opted to tweak human beings, generally, into something abnormal. But with DC, the Mythos MUST be well done, because you are essentially telling the story of an archetype.

Meh. I'm generally automatically not a big fan of anything that involves revealing the Joker's backstory. The backstory was the only bit about Jack Nicholson's Joker I didn't like. So an entire movie revolving around Joker's past is entirely unappealing. And yet I'll enthusiastically believe that it'll be better than Jared Letos joker that I will continue to say is an abomination.
