it's going to take place in the past. We know from the second movie that there have been six previous iterations of the Matrix, and Neo looked the same in each one (we see that in the screen behind him during his conversation with the Architect.
I'm pretty sure that this Neo isn't the same one from the first three movies. It's going to be more like this: Forty-five minutes into the first movie, Morpheus told Neo, When the Matrix was first built there was a man born inside that had the ability to change what he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit.
Neo is going to be in a previous iteration of the matrix and this time he will mentor Morpheus.

If they died in the 3rd, maybe it will somehow involve in the 4th installment where they're reborn as seperate people with no memory of who they really were. Sort of like a reincarnation or reprogramming, and one way or another figure it out most likely from an external source (perhaps Morpheus after he too finds out it really wasn't over) that their victory was provided by the machines to trick them into thinking they won to keep them from breaking out of the matrix. Maybe neo didn't really go to the real world and really die. Maybe it was simulated.

Matrix 4 plot: Neo gets reincarnated as John wicks dog but in the matrix world. There he has to fight machines while stuck as a dog. Trinity is reincarnated as a dominatrix who trains Neo to bark when he senses Terminators are near by, oops I mean machaines. And gives him treats for doing a good job.
Add in some other look whos talking animals and a few explosions and bam! Matrix 4!

The Matrix Trilogy is three of my favorite movies of all time! I got the DVDs, and I binge it on Amazon every couple of years, to preserve the discs.
The Matrix, in my sight, is right up there with James Bond, Dirty Harry, The Prisoner, Doctor Who, Orphan Black, The Breakfast Club, ET, The Wizard of Oz.

So, Trinity will be back? AWESOME! Would love to see her back! However, how will they do that? Will someone travel back in time to prevent her death? Will someonse say that, there's a part/copy of her mind in The Matrix & that, all that has to be done, is go inside, get it & install it in a newly made body?
