Eighth Grade let me down, epically. Made me very uncomfortable. I had really high hopes for it, too. In fact, nothing Bo Burnham does impresses me. His latest role in Promising Young woman was cringey as hell. Also, Perks is cringe city, despite the little known fact that it was shot in my hometown of Pittsburgh.
Call Me By Your Name is super overrated (theres essentially no plot line, climax, conclusion, etc) Plus, its so. Damn. Slow. Focusing on aesthetic, pretty shots of nature, or whatever, over everything else.
Thirteen (and Juno and Lady Bird) is (are) the only standout(s) here. (I havent seen Boyz or Kids, yet, though)
A true masterpiece. Perhaps because its the one of the oldest films on the list.
Also, WHY IS THE DEAD POETS SOCIETY AN HONORABLE MENTION. That film is one of Williams greatest of all time! RIP Robin, we miss you.

THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL was also the subtitle of The Diary of Anne Frank; I don't think the characters in the later version had as big worries;
THE HATE U GIVE deserved some attention at the Oscars, but IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK was also in the running; it would have been a bit depressing that nothing much had changed in the thirty-odd years between the source novels (also there might have been two African-Americans in thre running for Best Supporting Actress who were both called Regina)

I think 10 things I hate about you should be on this list because slight spoilers mostly spoiler free for the few that may have not seen it
Kat had been like her younger sister Bianca obsessed with the latest trends, the cutest clothes, and the cutest boys and you realize that she is kind of a jerk until the end when you realize what happened to her with her ex-boyfriend that made her the way she is now
It deals with a lot of issues even though it is a fantastic movie.

I am really happy that Boys N tha Hood was on this list. Growing up I watched this movie so many times because its like a black staple. I really think there should be a remake of this where they talk about what its like to be a young black female in the hood. Tupac definitely did a great job with Brendas got a Baby. This list however is so fire and Ive seen most of these movies except for Kids.

Edge of Seventeen should have been on here. The Hate U Give was so underrated, which I thought was kind of odd since the book had a lot of talk surrounding it.
And to point out something with Eighth Grade, we dont know what happened to her mom. Her dad has a line that says that her mom is gone, but we dont know if shes dead and hes a widower or she abandoned the family.

The problem with movies like this (and the commercials interruption this are also something that's wrong with society) is that movies end, often either tragic or happy. I had no friends back then and had to crawl out of that hell myself, still far from fully recovered. My life would not make a good movie, as it's both pretty boring and tragic

I saw Thirteen when I was 13 and going to rehab. It was honestly triggering (idk what other word to use) to watch but only because I saw so much of myself in it that it broke my heart. I'm almost 29 now and still can't watch it but it definitely serves a purpose as a cautionary tale.

My sisters keeper should have been on the list. It shows the point of view of a patient that has cancer but also the family. It show how it effects thr family. It was a beautiful movie. No sugar coating but rawness on a reality that hits too many homes.

Was introduced to thirteen when I was a trouble making youngster. I could really relate with the film and it actually made me think about my actions and how I treated my parents. Brilliant film for troubled young ones

It's crazy looking back at myself as a kid and then my own and realizing how much is flying around in their minds that they have trouble verbalizing and communicating to the ones that truly love them.

I watched a teen movie called Krap Nek. It haunts me
Eta - it's hard to find because I think it's been banned. But it touches on EVERYTHING negative that kids go through and adults do to them

Freedom writers, KIDS, Thirteen & the perks of being a wallflower were amazing movies that touched on the consequences of things one would go through during their early teen years

Another pick is the beautiful but understated Speak (2004); Young Kristen Stewart gives an incredibly nuanced and moving performance as an adolescent coping with trauma.

Im 17 and have watched every movie on this list and more and can honestly say alpha dogs deserves to be on this list along with the Virgin suicides

What about Edge of Seventeen? Teaches you about friendship, betrayal, and family while also tackling the issue of depression and loneliness.

I recommend every early 2000's Emile Hirsch movie: Imaginary Heroes, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, The Emperor's Club, The Mudge Boy.

Watching the movie Kids is like swallowing a lump of poison. You don't die from it, but it stays with you and you're never the same afterwards.
reply

I'm so glad to see Boyz in the Hood on here. If you haven't watched it, look for it on streaming. It's worth viewing at least once.
