These remakes outdid the Old Hollywood classics. For this list, well be defining Old Hollywood as American films made after the advent of sound through 1969 and the arrival of the so-called New Hollywood filmmakers. Our countdown includes The Fly, A Star Is Born, The Thing, and more! Which remakes of golden age classics are YOUR favorites?

THE MUMMY is more a (weak) attempt at Indiana Jones than remaking the Universal.
LOGAN may evoke lines from SHANE but doesn't remake it - leading children to safety is more THE PIED PIPER.
Lady Gaga is more remaking Streisand than Janet Gaynor, and the top A STAR IS BORN is always going to be Judy.
There had been two version of THE MALTESE FALCON in the 1930s; the 1941 one must be the best of all remakes.
TRUE GRIT 2010 has the good fortune to appear when Westerns were a relative rarity; the 1969 one was taken too much for granted.

His Girl Friday, Ocean's Eleven, and A Star is Born are the only remakes I call outright better. I think it's unfair to compare The Mummy, The Thing, and The Fly to their remakes -- I find all six very satisfying, each in their own way, and even feel more at home with the original Fly. Logan and Shane are each strong but simply too different. And sorry, but how do we proceed to forget all about Audrey Hepburn? If you want to sell me on a remake, it's got to be on the level of The Maltese Falcon beating out Satan Met a Lady.

The only picks I unreservedly agree with are The Fly, His Girl Friday, and Ocean's Eleven. It's a major stretch to call Logan a remake of Shane, and I still would put Shane above it. The 80's version of The Thing is scarier and more intense, but the 1951 is really good. The 1995 Sabrina is very enjoyable, but it has an unsolvable problem: Juia Ormond is not Audrey Hepburn. Not her fault, of course, but that's why no Audrey Hepburn movie should be remade.

Ransom. The original with Henry Fonda and Leslie Nielsen just sort of ended with the boy showing up at home after the broadcast where the father said what he was going to do with the money the kidnapper was asking for ransom. You never even find out who the kidnapper was. The remake with Mel Gibson, Renee Russo and Gary Sinise was much deeper and carried the story through to the end, with a nice twist along the way

Definitely prefer the 1999 Mummy to the 1932 film. While its hard to surpass Boris Karloffs Frankenstein, Bela Lugosis Dracula and Claude Raines Invisible Man, I feel like the 1999 Mummy film is one of the RARE times the original Universal Monster is totally eclipsed by the remake. Plus, watching the original after watching the 1999 series made me miss the action and corniness of that series.

OK I absolutely love The Mummy, but it is not a historical film. Yes Imhotep, Anck-su-namun, & Nefertiti were real, but nothing like theyre portrayed. The real Ankhesenamun was the wife of King Tut, not a concubine, & Nefertiti was her mother. Imhotep was a good guy, risen to god status, the god of architecture, mathematics, medicine, and patron of scribes.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard of the 1995 Sabrina being considered better than the '54 original. Ford and Ormond didn't have much chemistry, either. And the original version isn't a cult classic. Cult classics can't have been both critical and commercial successes when they were first released which Sabrina (1954) was.

I would have added You've Got Mail to the list - The Shop Around the Corner was a nice movie, but You've Got Mail managed to capture such a specific moment of time - chatrooms and dial-up, the moment when the big chain stores were putting the mom and pop stores out of business, plus the views of the Upper West Side are beautiful.

Okay whoever thought Logan was better than Shane must have been on something to think that it is. Most people don't remember Logan but as soon as you mention Shane everybody knows what movie you are talking about. Same goes with Sabrina and 3: 10 to Yuma where the original is still the best version and the more memorable versions.

Everybody has different opinions but I personally prefer The Sabrina Remake Than The Original mainly because of The Dialogue and The Chemistry between the two leads. I feel I wouldve loved the Original more if William Holden wouldve played Linus, since he had way more chemistry with Audrey Hepburn compared to Humphrey Bogart.

The Thing was a precursor of things to come.
In the original, the crew band together in order to defeat the enemy.
30 years later, the crew suspect each other, yet still manage to prevail.
Now in 2020, the crew IS the enemy and each camp must annihilate each other.
Can't wait to see what January 2025 will bring.

not old hollywood to start with but i enjoyed watching the remake of Suspiria way more than the original one, the og one is obv stunning and genre-defining but it hasn't aged that well imo, adn the fact that they went for the coplete opposite aesthetically-wise made things v interesting

I thought the Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson remake of a Star is Born was better but it's probably a generational thing and more young people probably haven't seen it. I liked the songs better and it's Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson was really nice eye candy.
reply

The best remake, you've shown here is The Thing. Normally I 'm not into newer gorier color horror/sci fi, but this was so far closer to the original written story, where the first was just another man in a monster costume(even if it was Marshal Dillon.
reply

I m sorry but I disagree with sabrina. The first is magic. The remake is longer and boring. I saw the front page with cary grant, transformed in a very funny sentimental comedy but the version with matthau and lemmon well incredible! Sorry for my english!
reply

The only one of these I have seen is Sabrina. I didn't see the original so, obviously, I had no idea that it was a remake. I think, now, you should start a list of movies that should not have been remade. I'll get you started: 1) King Kong and 2) Godzilla.
reply

True grit is barely a remake - remakes are supposed to have a feel and atmosphere of their own. The whole (2010) version is almost a complete copy (acting and costumes included, aside from a couple new scenes and an added ending. I was disappointed.
reply

I'm not too sure of calling 'Logan' a remake of 'Shane', especially since 'Shane' is directly mentioned in the movie.
And I'm less sure that 'Logan' is actually better than 'Shane'. I may have to rewatch both.

His Girl Friday is a testament to the what happens when you give incredible actors brilliant dialogue.
Also, proof that Rosalind Russell may have been the most underrated actress in Hollywood history.

reply

Genuinely thought Father of the Bride would get an honorable mention at the very least. Personal opinion: it should take the Logan spot because that movie seems more an homage than a remake
reply

I agree with the mummy and true grit. The rest them were about even. And you forgot to karate kid to me. That was better, but by the same token, that wasn't as old as the rest of the films

1999's The Mummy, 2010's 13 Assassins, 2003's The Italian Job, 2005's King Kong and 2014's Godzilla are all One of My Most Favorite Hollywood Remake Movies that are better than the Original.
reply

Sabrina the Remake better is the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond there really wasn't Much Chemistry Between Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn because he couldn't stand her
reply

Gimme a break. Judy Garland's A Star is Born has some of the greatest acting and music ever on film. The 2018 version only knocks your socks off because you're a sheep following the herd.
reply

Father of the Bride should have been on here. The original has some sweet moments, but it has nothing on Steve Martin almost tripping on the swan and then sliding on the ice
reply

The Magnificent Seven (2016) was a remake of the classic 1960 film of the same name. The original Magnificent Seven was an almost scene for scene knockoff of Seven Samurai released in 1954
reply

True Grit should have NEVER been remade much less having Jeff Bridges playing Rooster Cogburn! There are a lot of movies that should never be remade and quite a few that should.
reply

I would say Sabrina and True Grit are equal in quality because Audrey Hepburn and John Wayne are so iconic in their performances the remakes feel different but not less than.
reply

I'm so glad that someone else agrees the True Grit remake was the better version. My family thinks the original is better. But I think they just like John Wayne.
reply

I would argue most people dont prefer the 1995 Sabrina over the 50s oneI love Audrey but I do prefer the 1995 one myself but always thought I must be a piranha
