The studio system wasn't prepared for these rebellious stars. For this list, well be looking at those in the Old Hollywood film crowd who tried to fight against the studios and/or those who held power within the system as best they could. Our countdown includes Frank Capra, Kim Novak, Bette Davis, and more! Did we miss any of YOUR favorite rebels?

Greta Garbo insisted on equal pay.
John Gilbert was making $10, 000 a week to her $600 even though she was by far MGM's biggest star. When studio Head Louis B. Mayer refused her demands for equal pay, she uttered her famous line, I think I go home now (back to Sweden. It was no bluff. She stayed away from the Studio, unpaid, for seven months. Nothing Mayer did: not threats or smears in the Hollywood press fazed her in the least. Mayer had met his match. In face of Garbo's indifference, he caved into her demands.

What about Jimmy Cagney? He also sued Warner for breach of contract and won Jack Warner nicknamed Jimmy The Professional Againster because Jimmy was complicated also Tallulah Bankhead was complicated due to the fact that in the early 30s she worked at Paramount and her scandalous life was hard to conceal and Margaret Sullavan also was a very complicated woman because she had a very explosive temper and even Louis B Mayer was afraid of her

I think Ingrid Bergman deserves to be on this list. Despite being blacklisted by Hollywood after her affair and marriage to Rossellini, she still refused to apologize for it, even after receiving her second Oscar win. She also chose to continue to work in Europe instead of going back to Hollywood. I respect her strength and resilience to remain true to herself, despite all of the unfair treatment shed had to endure!

There's also Barbara Stanwyck who subverted the studio system by freelancing throughout most of her career, which may have costed her an Oscar (back then, a studio-backed campaigning for an Oscar was more often than not crucial, but also gave her the freedom to take on the roles that she wanted and avoid the egregious demands of the studio execs, something that most actresses of her time couldn't afford.

I am very disappointed that thats all you had to say for Kim Novak. She kept her last name and didnt sleep with the boss. How about the fact that they wanted her to be a blonde bombshell like Marilyn Monroe and she refused, or that she didnt want to be them to control her weight and her lifestyle so she left Hollywood hanging them out to dry to be vet assistant and raise horses.

Excellent list! Totally knew Olivia De Havilland would be number 1! She also rebelled against Warner Bros to get the part of Melanie in Gone With The Wind. There is a wonderful interview that Olivia did for the 2004 DVD edition of Gone Of The Wind called Melanie Remembers: Reflections By Oliva De Havilland where she talked about it briefly.

I thought Botis Karloff would have been on here, he helped found the Actors Guild and when they first started meeting it was incredibly dangerous to their careers so they has to meet in secret, and he stood up for fellow actors all through his career.

Carey Grant had to fight tooth and nail to get the movie Father Goose(my all time favorite. He wanted to look his age finally, and be a bit of a brute. He also wanted to work with an actress that was his age, but the studio wouldn't be swayed.

Not shocked by most of the women on this list, because you could tell by the way they carried themselves that they weren't the kind to mess with. Thought my girl Babs (Barbara Stanwyck) might make the list though.

Might as well make a top 10 list of stars who stood up to Harry Cohn. Anybody got a time machine? There's a golden age studio exec who needs a few kicks to the nuts.

What Kathrine Hepburn did simply for the right to wear pants was such a boss move, and just another reason why she was one of the greatest of all time.

Standing up to predatory male behaviour shouldnt be regarded as being rebellious Ms Mojo. Its not a message you should be spreading.
reply

I was sure Marlon Brando would be number 1. Never actually tied himself to a studio during the height of the old Hollywood studio system.
reply

Given that these actors were risking their careers, but they stand up against the company that ruined their lives or blackmailed them.
reply

Shirley Temple should be on the list. She was really young and had to fend off predators. No wonder she retired at 22 years old.
reply

Marilyn Monroe defied Fox and established her own production company. She fought the studio till the very end.
reply

Very very great inspiring list I like it a lot very very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever

Having your own husband trying to pimp you out is wild, that Weinstein before Weinstein came about was disgusting
reply

They were courageous to rebel. But as Bette Davis said it was that system that made them stars who could rebel.
