American Pie is by no means unexplained. The lyrics refer to the plane crash that happened on February 3, 1959 that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. The Big Bopper Richardson: The Day the Music Died.
In particular, Buddy Holly was becoming one of the top names of that generation. The influence of his work lingered for a long time on various composers and bands of the following decades. Ritchie Valens released La Bamba, a classic ever since.
McLean draws a parallel between the shock caused by the tragic interruption of the lives and careers of those young musicians who represented their generation so well with the loss of the innocence of an idyllic post-war America, compared to the turmoil and cynicism of the 60's and early 70's.
Hence the farewell to the symbols of that era: Miss American Pie and others.

many of the honorable mentions beat out number 2, blew it out of the water really. Most probably won't agree, but Metallica does nothing for me with Nostalgia, doesn't even really sound like something I should feel nostalgic about. There are plenty of songs from that era that I didn't fully appreciate, may have forgotten, or haven't even heard but the sound of them takes me back. Like I'm pretty sure I didn't hear Running up that hill before, but it sounds right for the time period. Only thing I remember of Metallica was how odd it seemed to me as I got older. I only ever heard guys mention them as music they listened to, but something about it was just off. Something about their tone it was always like they just rattled it out as an obligatory mention.

IMHO, Master of Puppets is phenomenally better than Kate Bush's 'Deal with God'. In addition to the strange off-key sounds, nothing turns me off more than mentioning the Christian god in a song. However I love Metallica's 'Creeping Death' and Jethro Tull's 'Locomotive Breath'. I'm a Norse pagan and I appreciate bands that don't pander to the Christian faith. James Hetfield's parents were Christian Scientists, so he had his own issues with religion. 'Dyers Eve' on 'And Justice For All' conveys his thoughts and feelings about fake religion.
Sorry, I also have strong objections to overtly religious songs.

Neverending Story should have been on there at number one or two. versus just an honorable mention. A lot of these songs I can hear just by tuning into the local radio stations, so it's not going to be transporting me anymore. Whereas, The Neverending Story, I hadn't heard in 20 years or more, it's just not on the radio(Yes, I'm an old buzzard. . REO, Africa, The Police, Metallica, etc, etc, are on my local classic rock station every single day. Neverending Story is totally nostalgic (for me.

I loved the soundtrack for stranger things. The way Will sang should i stay or should i go to himself in the upside down while he was hiding made me cry. And then the parallell of Max playing her favorite song to be safe from Vecna was genius

Middle school age kids were singing a reggae song 10: 13 about sharing a marijuana joint in 1982 to forget about their hunger, but even now people forget about their problems when they Pass The Dutchie with friends!

How can you. put Running Up That Hill in 1st place when fans were literally introduced to Kate Bush via this song in this show?
A nostalgic song would be a song you've heard before

Kyle Dixon / Michael Stein deserves a big credit in Stranger Things franchise. They made stranger things theme song, eulogy, soldiers, kids. They are very important duo in this show.

I love this list, but I have to say journey separate ways in Stranger Things season four was probably my favorite! Follow by coming up that hill. I love the 80s music!

'The Day the Music Died' in American Pie refers to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valens on 2/13/59. Not many kids today know that.

Speaking of Heroes anyone else find it interesting that such a sad but ROMANTICALLY coded song is used to show Mike grieve over the perceived loss of Will

Whoever made this list was apparently not alive in the '80s or else Neverending Story would have made it in the top 10.

How come Separated ways is not even subtly mentioned? Does Ms Mojo hate Journey, Steve Perry or ST fans?
