Why Fortnite's Battle Pass Is SO GOOD

Why Fortnite's Battle Pass Is SO GOOD

Fortnite has gotten a lot of things right, but one of the best things it's done is figure out how to make your money worthwhile It DIDNT get it right; you cant get a skin without paying. Pickaxe skins, backpacks and dances, sure, but not skins. You should be able to get EVERYTHING you can buy in a game by working hard enough, but failing that, you should at least be able to get A skin, even if its not the one youd ideally like. And theres a huge stigma against those who dont have skins, further incentivizing you to pay.
For a monetization scheme to be good, it needs to be COMPLETELY OPTIONAL. As in, you can get everything by working hard enough, paying just gets it faster. For it to be ACCEPTABLE, you at least need to be able to get SOME of every category of thing without paying.\r\n

I definitely agree Fortnite has one of the best monetization schemes out there (if not -the- best, but that doesn't mean it doesn't still have some exploitative elements to it. Mainly the fact you can't buy the battlepass or store cosmetics -directly-, you have to do so with v-bucks. Which wouldn't be a problem if the v-buck packs weren't done in such a way that you always have to buy a little more currency than you need, which then entices you to buy more currency so you can actually use your left-over currency etc.

I haven't played the game, but judging by the video, it's just a standard progression system a-la Call of Duty with pricetags on certain things. You complete challenges in CoD too and are rewarded accordingly with a call card or a weapon skin or a tactical doorknob for your shotgun. It's great and all but why pay money for it?
reply

Wow, that is a pretty good monetization scheme. I used to like League of Legends' because it was just a buy whatever cosmetic you want. But they've since embraced the random loot box model for rewards and damn if random prizes aren't like the shittiest way to reward time spent playing your game.
reply

. with the exception of archievements and progress, this is the regular League of Legends monetization system pre lootchests era. But hey! LL is a moba! Everyone hates Mobas for absolutely no reason beside personal taste, so, they feel in right of ignoring the good they did.

Constructive Crit: Ditch the repeated -effing- lines. It was effective once, but became weirdly distracting by the third time.
Otherwise, great analysis - thanks for sharing. I enjoy this format and length of content. This is a strong direction for Polygon video content

Oh god someone thinks they are funny. Besides just blantantly saying wrong, clickbaity stuff, the sound of crickets is the only appropriate thing about this video. It's weird to see someone grasp the fundementals of games for the first time and describe them in a video.
reply

1: 08 Pretty sure you can't complete enough challenges to go up 70+ tiers at once this early in the season. Just seems ironic that you'd use footage of someone who -clearly- paid V-bucks for maxed tiers while talking about -rewards ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME-

Randomized lootboxes are a fairly recent addition to the monetization systems games apply. Saying it's the best EVER because it's not randomized is to ignore games that came out as recent as 5 years ago. Felt unnecessarily click-baity.
reply

Dota 2 literally has the same exact thing, with the same exact name too, and has had it for years. I seriously don't get why people just ignore Dota 2 when talking about good F2P models when IMO it has one of the best F2P models around.
reply

Surprised he didn't mention that you can get enough v-bucks in a battle pass in a season to pay for next season's battle pass. In other words if you have no desire to pay more than 10 bucks you get the battle pass -forever-.
reply

I-m really surprised to see the video did not credit fortnight using a really similar payment system that warframe uses which allows players to earn premium currency for free mostly via trading with other players
reply

But you're doing tedious things in fortnite to unlock. Some are fun but finding stars in the map is not truly playing the game. -Finding puzzle pieces in the basements made me way better at the game-
reply

I don't actually play Fortnite, so it was nice to get a detailed description of this monetisation scheme. Seems pretty fair to me, hopefully it catches on as an alternative to lootboxes.

The down-pitched voice clips stick out like a sore thumb. If you want a similar effect that's more on brand for Polygon, I think autotuning a tiny melody would work a lot better.
reply

Watching the video I was like -Oh they used Awful Squd footage from a few weeks ago I wonder how they got permission- completely forgetting that this was a Polygon video
reply

Indeed, monetiziation done right, which fosters fairness among players. Finally a F2P without any unfair P2W features, this should be industry standard, now doubts.
reply

The concept of a monetization scheme is never going to be appealing. from a consumer perspective, at least. Obviously appealing to the devs and publishers.
reply

Fortnite managed to create a perfect monetization (that is still unnecessary, and they managed to perfectly capitalize on it too, with the Marvel sponsorship.
reply

The battlepass is legitimately perfect. This vid will get dislikes because a lot of people hate fortnites success, but unfortunately for them, it's true
reply

it's been years since you did a video on Warframe, which doesn't even have lootboxes. the game has changed a LOT. i'd love to see a second look.
reply

the best part is Battlepasses give you over $10 worth of V-bucks. meaning you can just buy the next one. using the v-bucks you earned.
reply

no one gonna talk about how battle pass has literally been a thing in dota for years with the exact same plan?
reply

Also you can buy battle pass for once and play the game enough to earn v-bucks for later seasons' battle passes.

who is this? who is speaking? it sounds like brian and russ mixed together
edit: im an idiot its clayton

reply

I-m loving this Clayton content we-re getting, so polished and vibrant. HAWX is an editing king, folks.
reply

This is compounded by the fact that this is a free game and all the examples you have were paid games
reply

i havent played Fortnite but the editing in this video kept me watching til its end! great work Clayton!
