I have super fine hair and a suuuuuper oily scalp. If I got a dollar for every time someone told me oh, just don't wash your hair, it will stop being so oily I'd be able to afford a house in today's economy. I tried for YEARS to do that. As someone who has sufffered from telogen effluvium a few times over the years and general hair loss due to genetics and hormones, not washing my hair actually made my hair loss worse. I spoke about this very thing to my dermatologist who specialises in hair loss and he told me that you cannot make your skin produce less oil by not cleaning it - all that does is cause build-up; your hair doesn't get used to it, YOU do. You get used to seeing it like that, you style it in different ways so that it's not obvious. I listened and now wash my hair daily with a gentle shampoo and my hair looks pretty good for what it is at my age (47.

Hi Kayley, I have been washing my hair for almost a year daily! With a Sulfate free shampoo which doesn’t contain a lot at all. I dry my hair with low heat on the scalp and let the rest air dry. I use a very gentle conditioner once in a while and also use some AHA/PHA peeling on the scalp. I have an extremely oily scalp which I was ashamed of my entire life. Since I changed to that routine I don’t have bad hair days. Never felt better. I have very fine flat virgin hair that I never done anything to. Before I tried washing very rarely, no poo, all the different shampoos and of course dry shampoo (natural version. My scalp gets itchy and flakey every day if I don’t wash it.
Love the nuance take! Still silicones and sulfates won’t be part of my routine just due to health and environmental issues Great to see you back!

The biggest hair myth I fell for is that curly hair is naturally more dry! My hair is very healthy and soft naturally while having loose curls and I don’t heat style or color it, so I don’t need to worry about adding heavy conditioning products after conditioner. Most of the time, except maybe if my hair is feeling more dry than usual or it’s in the depths of a dry winter, I will be using a strong shampoo, a lightweight conditioner, and a lightweight strong hold product like mousse or gel. I don’t use leave ins, I don’t use curl creams. They actually make my hair too soft and it won’t hold! Sometimes, I even use a salt or texture spray to almost dry out my hair Realizing this was the biggest game changer for me!

The myth I believed in would be that 2-in-1 shampoo & conditioner is useless. I don't know if it's the same in America but in the Netherlands it is often dunked on as a product only used by men who do not care about their appearance.
I have been searching for a gentle shampoo and a nourishing conditioner that doesn't weigh my hair down with no luck. I tried everything that was recommended. Eventually, at 30 years old, I decided to try things that weren't recommended. And I found out that the often dunked on, cheap, 2-in-1 shampoo & conditioner works amazing for me.
Thank you for debunking the myths you believed in Kayley, because I believed in them until this very video.

I have found as I age, especially as the grays come in my hair type is beginning to change. I have always had 1A /1B fine low porosity hair. The grays as they transition are more wavy and slightly coarser. At 62 I am conservatively maybe about 20% gray. I don’t know that I have found my holy grail of shampoo but I have found brands and or types that I absolutely hate. I don’t use product at all so if I used a clarifying shampoo my hair feels rough and my scalp feels tight, even if I were to use it once a month, I also stay away from volumizing shampoos for the same reason. Honestly my hair is waist length, one length it ain’t gonna volume no matter what I do to it.

My main myth I fell for-co-washing for my curly hair. My hair is fine-co-wash was a disaster for my hair and scalp.
My hair is on the dryer side but fine (and curly. I find my hair does best if I pay attention to my scalp more than my hair. I wash about every 3-4 days. There is no one size fits all on wash frequency and sometimes more often or less often is the right choice.
My one size fits all hair care rules IMO-be gentle when brushing your hair. Use a satin pillowcase at minimum. Include a heat protecting leave in product. Last-clarifying is needed-how often depends on your hair but it should be a part of the hair washing cycle.

I have thick, dry, coarse wavy hair. When I was a teenager in the late 90s/early 00s all of the advice in magazines was pretty much for straight, fine hair and needless to say, it made my hair drier and frizzier. In my 30s, I tried the Curly Girl method because people kept telling me my coarse, frizzy waves would be beautiful curls if I used CGM. My waves were more defined, sure, on day 1, but by day 2, even with a bonnet, they were puffy and frizzy again, and all of the products left my hair sticky and dry-feeling.
I’ve settled on a hybrid method that works for me and I think my hair finally looks decent most of the time.

I was definitely influenced to move from every other day washing to once every four days. It was all fine, but after a few months, I started to notice my hair was falling out at a higher rate. I initially thought it was a shampoo or even stress or something else. After a few months of trying different things, I did some more research on reasons for hair fallout--lo and behold, infrequent washing was on the list. I went back to every other day, and my hair came back after a few months. I suppose it could have been a different reason, but I definitely realised I was getting zero benefit from washing my hair so infrequently.

I tried a million different things to get my curls to look nice for more than a day. curly girl method routines, lots of highly recommended products. I ended up going back to the same suave whipped cream mousse I used in college after trying to find something 'better' or more natural or silicone free. I just wash it again and throw in the mousse if i want it down again the next day - it's faster than most of the'refresh'methods considering i air dry it most of the time. I realized it just works for my hair better than everything else and bonus, it's cheap. Lol

I’m proud of you Kayley! It takes courage to let go, to set aside strongly held beliefs and learn. I fell for all these myths when I started to learn how to have healthier hair. Giving up blow drying and my curling iron taught me I had wavy hair, and I’m grateful for that, but after years of no silicones, washing once a week and zero heat styling my hair was still breaking. Thanks to Abby Yung I went back to sulfates and silicones a few months ago, started washing twice a week, and my hair is noticeably stronger and longer.

I recently heard that using dry shampoo was as bad as smoking cigarettes lol, it was already being debunked in the video I was watching (I think by Lab Muffin, but I just had to laugh at that one!
Also personally, I was lead to believe that if you don't heat style your hair then you won't get split ends. I went 10 years without heat styling so my hair would stay healthy, and guess what, I still got spit ends. It actually looks way better when I heat style a couple times a week and just protect it.

This video mentions cleansing routines. I have a question for Kayley or any hair-knowledgable person in the comments: what brands, methods, etc. do you recommend. I'm someone who loves putting on a natural moisturizers and oils and products so I was under the misbelief that since I was natural and not using silicones that I didn't need to focus on having really strong shampoos. Right now I use natural shampoos once a week and my hair has been pretty happy with that but I worry I'm not cleansing enough.

Love this video so much! Was raised with an all chemicals are bad approach in India so would shampoo as infrequently as possible and was 0 silicones forever. Tried abbey Yung’s method as a last ditch effort 3 months before my wedding to see some improvement. My fine poly was growing and was SO SOFT with silicones. I also loved the bond building products which made me more comfortable in using some heat every now and then to make my hair look good. Never looking back

I do great with silicones! When i went without them, my hair looked so dry!
My problem is, my hair just doesn't seem to like protein! I've heard that protein sensitive hair is not a thing, but my hair feels differently. I try to make sure i balance with lots of moisture as well. It seems like my hair holds on to the protein and spits out the moisture. Im even s ared to use bonding products, because im afraid it will make my hair look like stra again!

As someone with scalp psoriasis, putting my scalp health above my strand needs, and figuring out what my scalp actually needed, was game changing. Add on various bond repair products, and I'm washing my hair nearly every day, with fairly aggressive products, and my hair has never been better. Now, if I could get out of the habit of putting my hair in the same bun everyday, I could grow out the fuzzies around my face and my hair would be textbook perfect.

Ok I’m an oily girl, like oil slick by day 2! I’ve been told dry shampoo (which don’t work for my hair, tried them all) So I do all the things, wash it daily, blow dry it daily, heat style 3 x a week, bleach it 4x a year to keep some of the oil at bay. Bonus I trim my hair at least 2x a year, if I’m lucky to remember. With all of this my hair grows just fine and my stylist said my hair is healthy given everything I do. Win for me

I definitely have heard that one about washing your hair as infrequently as possible. At some point, I gave up trying to stretch it and just wash my hair when I feel like I need it (maybe every 3 days tops. I also have tried dry shampoo a few times but I think I either notice it too late or I don't use it enough It never seems to fully handle the oil lol. Thanks for sharing these with us, it's always exciting to learn more about hair!

A long time ago I tried giving up silicones and sulfates and my curly/wavy hair did not seem as happy. I switched back to my normal routine- instant improvement. When it came to what was better, the internet was telling me one thing, my body told me another and I chose to listen to my body. It was weird though to see a common narrative spoken as truth that did not line up with my experience. This was very affirming, great video!

Silicone and SLS was so demonized! As an oily skin girly using a shampoo with SLS has let me go longer between washes because my scalp actually gets clean now. And as a super fine hair girly using a Silicone based hair oil to finish my hair had nearly eradicated the mats I get in the hair by my neck when wearing my hair down. So now I can wear my hair down more often and I have less breakage!

I've discovered over the last 6 months that my hair is indeed wavy/curly and I've gone on a JOURNEY trying to find the right products for my personal curl/wave pattern. I have medium porosity, density, and texture. I've asked my curly friends for baseline recommendations and my own research and over the last 6 months, my hair gets curlier as I find the products that work for me.
