The 2000 s and the White Out. Casting agents, celebrities, fashion designers, magazine editors, and top Black models discuss the White Out, the years between the mid-nineties and mid-2010 s when the Black model disappeared from the fashion runways. In revealing interviews, trailblazers Edward Enninful, Bethann Hardison and Iman, and top models Cindy Bruna, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdana Phillips, Joan Smalls, and Jeneil Williams share personal stories about a controversial era in fashion. THE: A big thanks to Bethann Hardison, Edward Enninful, Steven Meisel, and the others who continue to use their influence to push against the wall of racism that Prada spearheaded for so long. Most of those same gatekeepers who refused to book black models are still working, but now are simply checking off the POC boxes in the castings, replacing the models the next season. Sessilee Lopez spoke about being too dark for clients, but now many only want to book the darkest skinned black models because they are edgier and they want a black background to contrast a brightly colored garment.
