While this is nice in a city, is this really sustainable? I don't think so. You know, growing shoots from seeds is something every owner of a 70s chia pet has done, but those seeds need to come from somewhere. To paint the bleakest picture available: In the future humans will live underground because the surface will be uninhabitable. If you think nuclear or toxic you're far off - with just a few degrees higher average temperature wind speeds will increase to a point that makes agriculture or living on the surface largely impossible. A system like this will fail in no time in that scenario due to the lack of seeds - for those you need grown plants.
Well, in the future none of this is sustainable because we'll be lacking pollinators underground.

So much of this just BEGS for automation. Indoor farming in controlled environments will definitely be a large thing in our future. The fact you can grow the food without any insecticides or herbicides or similar, avoid issues with soil depletion, use less water, and you can do that while eliminating the huge amount of waste that comes with transporting food is amazing.

There's something kinda like this in Milwaukee called Growing Power - they're about urban farming & getting fresh food to people who normally don't have access. They have a hydroponic system that includes fish, whose poo acts as fertilizer, and they get food leftovers from local restaurants to use as compost, which they use in the green houses.

wait. surly soil is more sustainable than carpet and more natural as the carpet will have had to have been cleaned with chemicals and cut up in machines with oils and everything, making it less sustainable and less natural for the plant?

Isnt this very inefficient though? You have to use LED lights all the time which definitely uses a lot of energy. I dont see how this is the future when we try to save energy.
