Ive made the string balls and trees for years and the difference between us is that I use a 75/25 ratio of glue to water. I get the string on the form the way I want, definitely making sure the string overlaps itself (for strength, and then brush a layer of straight glue onto the structure before setting it to dry for 48-72 hours depending on the humidity. The thickness of your yarn/string, nor the stiffness should matter to the end product. The one thing that might matter is how long the pieces are and how long they are out of the glue solution before the are applied. I have taught school kids how to do these and have always suggested each piece of string be no longer than 3 yards. It doesnt matter how many pieces it takes to cover your form to your desired aesthetic. As long as you come back in and add 100% glue over the entire piece, you should be golden. As others have suggested, you could use Mod Podge or add a stiffener. It kind of depends on how many Christmas you want to use them. The balls my daughter made when she was 5 or 6, I sprayed a good coat of liquid starch on to make them last. She is 30 now and they are still as round as the weekend we made them. I hope you try the trees again. Have fun and thanks for sharing such fun diy decorations. I am looking forward to trying the cement project, it was fabulous!

Hey Hon, you squeezed out wayyyy too much glue. Yes it should look sloppy when it's wet.
And mine always take at least 2-3 days to dry enough (depends on weather outside and what temp/humidity is in your apartment too) to take it off the mold but then after I remove it, I give it at least another 24 hours, longer if you have the time, to let finish drying 110%. It will dry clear. Also cool to use lil water balloons and using jute string or any thinner string (maybe a mix of cotton and jute) and wrap around the lil tiny water balloons to make orbs. If you want to glam it up, once it's dry, take a small paint brush with either left over glue in your bowl (use a container so you can put a lid on it to save) or mod podge and just dab on whatever areas you want and add some chucky clear glitter or whatever color you want! Make really cool everyday decor or make a few and pile in a big wooden bowl for a centerpiece on a table or even coffee table. Good luck! Happy Holidays!

I just loved the yarn part, especially since nowadays there are so many people out there that only show things that are always perfect Instagram-Pinterest like, when in real life it is not, and it is important to show this part too, especially to the youngest who attach so much importance to everything they see on the internet and assume a virtual reality that does not fit in with their lives in reality and become depressed. So thank you very much for your honesty and humility, I really appreciate that you didn't remove that part of the video. Merry Christmas!

Hi Josh!
'd this video.
My mom used to belong to a social group called Home Bureau. They met once a week & socialized whilst making a craft & then snacking on what a couple women brought!
I have inherited most of her kept projects! Your wreath reminded me of one she made with her friends.
This next Christmas/2021, do a new one & add shelled nuts(Brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts & pecans)
The cones & various nuts look amazing along side one another!
You'll it!

Very cool projects, it is great that they can all be embellished and individualised to suite different decors, personalities and interests. I was a little disappointed though that the projects in the vlog cost more than a $1 which didn't reflect the title of the vlog. Most of the projects were fairly budget friendly and cute so that part of the title was very true.

In regards to the yarn trees - I think you used too much water the measurements should be 90% glue 10% water and you would be good to go - I make gift boxes in all shapes and forms from cardboard and paper and when I use that mixture they are hard as wood - made a dresser for my kids out of cardboard, I can stand on it and it doesn't even budge: )

Better to use 100% glue or just a touch of water. This project would also look good with some of the faux snowflakes ot glitter added to the glue. These are really fun to make as a group / get together project. Merry Christmas Drew from Perth, Australia.

Thank you for showing your fail. It's not the fail that matters it's how we solve it I use watered down PVA glue and found that worked with jute. Would love to see your cones trees and how they turn out with the lights in. love your ideas.

I probably would have tried to harden the trees with a starch spray that I got from the laundry section at Walmart. I've used that to harden up crochet xmas ornaments and it works amazing! I might even try this diy out that way! Lol you Drew!

Love that you shared your fail instead of pretending everything always works out perfectly! I suggest trying different base such as an ice cream cone or a cardboard cone. Also, I would try a stronger glue and try letting it dry longer!
