How to Draw a Portrait Sketch - Master Study Drawing Tutorial SchaeferArt Karen: This is a really great lesson. Always using a reference picture helps so much. Some where early on I got the idea to only learn anatomy, shapes and proportions and it didn't teach me how to draw real people. Quick sketches keep me from over thinking what I'm looking at too. I got a table out to have with me so when I see something i like i can stop and do some sketching. I spent almost 2 hours a few days ago on some pictures i found. Your really making me think about and want to do good drawing again. Thank you

If you look at Sargent's sketches, he blocked in drawings with a combination of straight lines and simple ovals and curves in an intuitive and loose way. He didn't use a very strict system of straight lines like a Bargue drawing.
The Bargue like systems of straight lines is very good, but one has to be careful not to get too stiff and orthodox in using it.
I don't know if you ever read Harold Speed's book called The Practice and Science of Drawing, but you would definitely find it interesting.

Hi! I am loving these little classes! I'm drawing everyday and really enjoying your videos! I do have to tell you when you start with a 2B pencil. I can't see what your doing. Its to light for us to see. Also, I found your tree painting and I'm doing it, but I can't find your drawing titled -Woods-. You have inspired me BIG TIME! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Very nice, subtle contrasts on the darker paper works well. I am concentrating on realism now and loving it, so I will be following for more tips. I sketch from scratch without reference lines all of the time as it's just how I grew up doing it.
Happy Days and God Bless my friend -

Hey you are losing a lot of likes and views and a lot more. I noticed it cause the video series you uploaded -Learn how to draw- Had a lot more comments and likes. Wonder why people stop

The sharper the pencil, the sharper the drawing! You should definitely make it habit to keep your tools sharp. It-ll make the process of putting the graphite down much more controlled.
