Drawing Materials Explained - Which Pencils, Paper, & Pens to Use? SchaeferArt Acacia: As someone who teaches painting and drawing, and having struggled and experimented with my materials for the 15+ years ive been making art, I mostly disagree. Though you are right that its better to just get started creating with what you have, as without practice there is no improvement, I also always recommend getting your hands on the best materials you can as soon as you can. Paint especially. The time I wasted fighting sub par paint was time I could have spent getting better and creating more. Brushes affect marks and control. Surfaces affect the look and feel of the paint and interact differently. Dont get me started on mediums. I was largely held back by my materials a hundred times over and I see my students struggle the same way. Just because one can make decent art and learn with the bare minimum doesnt mean one should have to, or that the art making and learning would not be excelerated by better materials.

For me, it is about recognizing your limitations. Skill will always be a limiter, of course. I ask myself if I-m limited by the tools or skill - and focus on improving that limit. Mostly, skill.
I did buy some nicer paper and graphite recently to try - while I liked the materials more, the result was about the same from a more objective pov. So, I-ve got a ways to go before really valuing new tools. Doing MORE art is a better investment right now.

I think this is true for the most part, except for watercolors in particular, because student grade watercolor paint and cheap paper performs so drastically different from professional paints and cotton paper. I almost gave up completely on watercolors before i decided to try better paper and paint. For every other medium though, you are spot on.

I-m learning to draw on my iPad with Apple pencil. I make a lot of mistakes, so I erase a lot. The digital media lets me do that, easily. Is there some technical reason why I should use pencil and paper? I like to watch you draw. I try to copy what you do. Is this a good way to learn?

Good advice to start out with affordable and the basics, I agree very much. One example I think about is watercolor on paper that is not 100 percent cotton. If you learn how to control paint on it, then you use the 100 percent cotton paper it makes it so easy and fun.

I strongly believe you don't need the best materials to draw, all you need is willingness, patience, commitment and practice. I have never used best or any expensive materials and believe can draw reasonably well.

I might add that if you want to use better materials you'll need to understand why it's a better material. If it wasn't for the experience of using cheap materials early on I wouldn't enjoy the materials I use now.

Better materials lead to better results like better results should lead you to better materials. Btw, I started drawing with your videos. Highly recommended for anyone.
