Maybe the highlight shape is also caused by diffraction the same way that stars appear to have spikes although they are round? It's simply called -diffraction spike- and it's caused by the obstruction of our eyelashes and protein buildup on our eyes. The same effect happens in telescopes but it's regular. I notice it clearer in highlights on cars on a sunny day for example. Anyway, it's a nice tip to simulate what light does (maybe) and it also helps describe the form better. thank you.

Am i the only one that sinks that those -flapping- shapes and values on the student picture are just BETTER for caricature itself? You know - to express the person?
When you smooth them out the filling are just not there.
