Zoe Dufour gave me a studio tour when I was in New York recording her upcoming video lessons. We get to see a typical day at the Grand Central Atelier, meet some students and instructors, and see some of Zoe-s best work. If you missed Zoe-s Quicksketch Sculpting video you can see that here handmade: These schools are becoming an industry. And they don't teach Art, they teach 19thC academic drawing and painting technique. They're something like technical schools that prep artists for a career in nostalgia production. Perhaps that sounds a bit heavy handed, but I graduated from such a school and trust me, there is quite a bit of nutty discussion about 20th C modernism being a mistake to be overcome and the pernicious societal effect of photography. In these schools, you will learn SO much more about painting, drawing or sculpture technique and materials than you will in more conceptually oriented programs, but for these academic art programs technique is an end in itself, and you'll notice a decided sameness of the student and faculty work.

I'm just going to say it. This is fantastic. A place like this can teach you amazing technique, and hopefully by the end you will be able to translate what you see in life onto canvas representationally. HOWEVER, if you dont grow past that, I personally think that it gets repetitive and boring. At some point, everyone can paint a nice portrait. You have to push it further, beyond whats just in front of you.

I would absolutely HATE it here. Its like a weird fine art cult that's so lofty and hoity toity that it sucks the humanity out of art. Screw individuality, let's pump out a bunch of carbon copy wannabe Renaissance -masters- who, yes, are highly skilled, but whose art is so boring and homogeneous that my eyes glaze over. Is this how impressionists felt about the Salon?

I-ve been literally waiting all my life to finally apply to one of these school. After failed attempts at conventional private art school. That will kind of lump you together based on creative expression. I-ve finally found home.

The -school- looks like an untidy rundown warehouse! How do you define - best-? In what? Or is it to promote selling a learning video?
