As someone who is reluctantly crammed into a subdivision with really bad dog owners, that frantic dog was triggering. Our neighbor likes to leave their dog outside all day, and if a leave casts a shadow on their lawn, she goes nuts. I don't understand how anyone can hear their dog going off and NOT train them. X_X
Anyway, tangent. This video is both super relaxing, and super envy-inducing. Can you come be my brother for a day, too LOL. (Seriously though, I could almost feel the air while you were out picking plants and resetting the beds. I don't know if it actually WAS morning, but it felt like it, and I love those dewy mornings where the sun is gentle but bright)

Thanks for this video. It has a lot of good tips and reminders for us beginners. Each year I do a little better and grow a little more with less trouble. I have learned to start a few extra plants than I think I'll need so I can choose the healthiest and strongest to plant out. I'm not the best at gardening yet so having a few extra to cover for making a mistake means I still get a good harvest. I'm getting better each year but still some things go wrong. I keep a notebook to of what I grow and how it went. I get it out at seed starting time and read it to see what changes I need to make for this year.

Although this was a bit lengthy, I really liked the step-by-step approach of working with a new gardener who is, like me, on the 2nd year of growing a more sizable garden. I did have a question, though. I live in Michigan, Zone 6a, FYI. Last fall, at the end of season, I amended the soil in my Birdie's beds with compost to add organic matter for fertility and topped with mulch for the winter. I was planning to add some granular organic fertilizer and worm castings before planting out this spring. Would you, in general, recommend this to other raised bed gardeners

It's all so confusing. I would like to plant a few plants every couple weeks to extend my harvest of fresh vegetables. Especially the one and done plants to where the same variety plant one 1 can be harvest today and the next plant be ready for harvest the following week, the next one the following week. And so on for as long as possible.
And do many different plants the same way instead of a mass harvest that I need to hurry up and figure out how to can and store before it goes bad.

Good episode for this season, as we are all looking forward planning the growing season.
I have a question re starting seeds: why do we start seeds in smaller containers ( 6 cell packs) versus larger pots (3 inch) I heard Jacque talk about starting larger seeds (cucumbers) in larger pots, but I don’t think he explained why that is okay, and, not okay with smaller seeds Has anyone compared same type of seedlings started in different size pots Thanks, Sue

I do wish you were using organic soil since you are growing veggies.
Ranoculas and pansies don't like hot weather. Make sure your brother knows if they start to die around May it's not because he did something wrong.
The other thing I wonder about is though it's fun to plant herbs together, Basil wants a lot more water than rosemary. Personally I would have planted basil next to the space you intend to plant tomatoes.
Just my 2 cents. I enjoy your videos

I am a little confused on the harvest timing. If you start, say a head of lettuce ( with a 45 day harvest) inside and transplant outside after 4 weeks. Would the harvest time be 45 days after you transplant it Or is it 45 days after it germinates inside
And if you sow it outside what is the harvest time then Is it 45 days after germinating But then why would you sow inside at all if it only adds 4 weeks to your harvest time

Have all 4 of my birdies beds planted for Spring, and have 4 other beds to fill with seedlings. Just started two flats of seeds in my epic seed starting trays yesterday. I actually even labeled everything this year. My motto for this year is if you don't plant it it can't grow. I have 1 1/2 acres so have no excuse not to go all in! Thanks for all your informative videos to motivate me to get out in the garden!

I'm sure many of us would appreciate this becoming a quarterly or biannual series rather than an annual one. Bryan asks all the right questions for a new gardener and your insights and reminders for him are ones that many of us need as well. Touching base as each season rolls through is a great reminder of all the small things we can do to keep our gardens moving along without major drama.

Woohoo! I was hoping you'd get back to the brother's new garden! I love that Epic Bro isn't afraid to ask questions because if I was sitting next to you I'd be hammering them at you. Also - watching you do this from NH in zone 5a makes me want to move. I have two feet of snow that needs to melt and then I have a month of mud season to get through.

35: 34 I didn’t know you had to add the germination time tiny’ stage til transplant transplant til harvest. Seed packets have been misleading me all this time!
41: 55 I direct sowed carrot seeds into a grow bag. I’ve moved them a lot, depending on the weather. I’ll have to see if that disturbance means fewer carrots.

I love love love this video when you sit down and talk to a complete beginner about seed starting. Even though I have started seeds for many seasons, I want to hear all the questions and check to see if I did anything wrong, or compare my own answers with yours to see what I missed, what you think about.

Next time in OC --- go to Laguna Hills Nursery. Way better than Armstrong and its nearby your brothers in Santa Ana. Best local shop here in OC that I've found. They also have Top Pot bags which I would love to see in the blind soil test if you do that again with the big bags blind test.

I'm seed starting for the first time this year. Did my onions, celery, and peppers, in February. But i just went slap happy and dumped the whole seed packet over the cells.
March seeds will be a bit more reserved and controlled now that I have watched all my favorites start their seeds.

I do often STARE at my seeds but I'm not sure I need the Epic Gardening crew to give me a complete guide on it. assuming they haven't learned some kind of pseudo-druidic powers that encourage growth through some kind of eye contact plant pleasing mantras. In that case. sign me up!

This video format was so incredibly helpful and natural! Thank you to your brother for asking every single question no matter how small it was- I would have the same questions. And, all your answers concise, and then your brother repeating it back to you really makes the point clear.

This was one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Thanks for all the tips, details and just plain talk. Also thank your brother and SIL. Maybe do another video in another harvest zone for the next steps of the season-transplanting and starting summer plants.

What a perfect video for those of us starting our seeds indoors! How long would you give a stunted seedling before throwing in the towel I have a few seeds that seem stunted for the last 2-3 weeks without progress. Should I just start over on them
reply

Thanks for this! We started our garden last year and this will also be our first year starting most from seed! I’ve got some seedlings started (our frost date is still quite a ways away) and got a greenhouse that needs to be built this weekend

I feel like your brother could benefit from writing some seed starting dates down on paper lol or set a reminder on the calender or even follow up video where you start the summer crop in a few weeks then transplant in another few weeks
