Lol, I have a five year old basil that still looks and tastes amazing. It now has spawned a couple baby basil plants. I am religious about pruning and sharing basil with friends and family. I also live in Tucson. Loves direct sun and heat. Its the biggest one Ive ever had. Beautiful and amazing. The leaves are now at least six inches long. It freezes every year and I cut it back in the spring. Summertime it grows to about five feet wide and three-four feet tall.

I have found if I have the first pot, from seed, sitting in a good light and temp and I place two pots on either side of the first one I allow the first to go to seed. They replant themselves, from seed and the second, third, fourth etc. plants are heartier and greener. The flavor fantastic. Give them what they desire and natures abundance provides. In the summer the birds replant too and I share in their bounty.

Thank you, this is great! I have grown basil successfully on my balcony for years (and now in garden boxes, which seems to be working as well) but always started from nursery seedlings or seeds. And I've never grown basil indoors in the winter so always start fresh every spring. I wonder if I can get a plant to survive on a windowsill over the winter!

Tools should be disinfected. sterilization is a whole different level. Isopropyl alcohol, lysol, and peroxide are some of the choices. You also want to root your cuttings in shallower containers. it's harder to keep the media at the top of a 1 gal. pot moist. Great stuff. thanks. I'm off to start snipping!

Went to a Thai restaurant and they gave me some Thai basil still on the stems. Im current propagating it and maybe a day or so away from planting. Theyre developing solid roots.
I guess you could theoretically buy basil from the store in the clamshells that still have the stem and propagate those

My acquintance always buys basil and never takes them out of the jar. Then they die.
She then complains about them dying.
I told her the solution was to plant them in soil.
She went; Hm. nah too much trouble' and continued her system. The store loves her.

Tried Mykos twice. ZERO difference.
Rather expensive experiment.
Another problem with Mykos is that they imprint a feebly visible expiration date on the part of the bag YOU THROW AWAY!
Sweet Basil can help repel Tomato Hornworm.

Some say break an egg under the dirt and that feeds the new plant. What do you think. Or some say egg shells mixed in the dirt. Can I do Rosemary? Cilantro? What about a peace Lilly? Sorry Im full of questions.

Mine always rot! I've only tried propagating in water with store bought basil. It's not in soil it's a bunch tied with a rubber band on 1 end. Is that why mine don't survive? Does it matter?

Do you leave the new propositions to grow in those small pots? Or do you eventually need to transplant the basil into bigger pots? Going to try propagating today!
