This is perfect timing for me as I also have a huge oak in the front yard. For 5 years I have struggled with developing a garden under the oak without irrigation which I would love if someone else would maintain it. I am giving up and moving all the plants under the oak to my backyard where this is better and moister soil.
This past spring I removed all my foundation plants along the front of my home. This fall I intend to plant the foundation and want it all to be low maintenance.

What a great gift for your parents! I have old trees like this in my yard, some that nothing will grow under. I do have success tucking spring bulbs like daffodils and crocuses around the big roots of the trees themselves, so I at least get a little flowering there. It is so dry they don't seem fussy if you can't get them very deep.

I think it would be a real challenge to work in that area under the front windows that slopes so steeply down. I would want to even that out a bit or put in a retaining wall/raised bed. Looking forward to see how it turns out. Your parents are lucky to have a you help & save them thousands

Thanks, Danielle. I was really looking forward to this project, as I am planning a revamp of my front yard as well. It's quite small, but I want a very low-maintenance area. And plan to focus annuals in pots for the seasons. The house looks beautiful, and I love the blue colors.

Yes! Such great inspiration as I feel I'm in the same situation in wanting less work in my front garden. I spend most of my time in the back landscape that does require more physical work. I'm here for the project and thank you for documenting it all along the way.

Excellent start on the renovations! BTW, I love the stone wall they have that was visible in some of the shots. Stone walls are a favorite of mine. Certainly enjoying this garden journey. I hope we get to meet the golden retriever who lives here too.

Your planting plan is already coming together. We have a huge oak tree shading the front and side of our house, and I have wanted more hydrangeas, but wasn't sure if they could handle that much shade. Sounds like I should try it.

that looks so much tidier with a more cohesive look for the front of the house. Great start Danielle! It will be beautiful when it is all finished. Your parents are so blessed to have a daughter like you! Happy anniversary to them.

Gorgeous color scheme! Love your ideas as always. I choose white and green for my shrinking gardens arthritis and age related. Your parents will be thrilled and I know it will grow into beauty. Great start Sandi

Gardens do need to be refreshed occasionally. I like the simplicity of your design.
You do give me reason to rethink my garden game as I am getting older and weeds have taken up so much of my attention.

your ideas. It's going to beautiful. I never heard of storm hydrangea, going to check that out. Going simple is where we all eventually get to, still having beauty. ENJOY the holiday.

Can’t wait to see the rest of this project. You’ve motivated me to get rid of some things that just aren’t working. Gotta go garden now!

Nice job! It’s already looking better. The boxwoods will really give it the format structure it lacked before. I look forward to seeing it develop further.

I saw the Bishop's weed/Goutweed and the hair stood up on my head. All mine has been gone for years now (tons) but apparently I'm still traumatized.
