Fantastic nights fishing John. I get all the excitement from a chair and you get the being there. Had to revisit your dropper rig video (which I thought was well presented) and never used it yet, but will do in the future. I used to catch a lot of flatfish back home, dab and flounder mainly and caught always on an Aberdeen long shank. The longest rag worm I ever had was 3 foot long and had a pair of jet black pincers which would of scared a shark lol. Can't get rag worm over here in Oz, but you should check the methods they use for getting beach worm, thinner than a lug worm too.
I also used bronze hooks over steel because I felt they had a better point to the hook but went dull quicker. Still, if you're into sharpening hooks, they could last a tad longer.
Now, we have laser cut hooks with great points. Peeler crabs were not that easy to find ( crabs can only mate when they are crackling with a skin growing beneath the shell, or soft) but were considered the best bait. then Rag worm, then Lug worm. squid etc etc and used normal thread to tie the softer baits. Now we have stretchy fishing thread which I just bought a batch of ( wish I had this in the 60's, would've saved some time taking the thread off the hook and line.
some fisherman over here have resorted to not using rod stands and have concreted tubes into the rocks where possible and stick their rods into those. ( Fish won't pull rods into the water ) and have placed them at different lengths on the rocks.
Keep those videos coming and I might have something sensible to say on one of them lol. Tight lines mate.

Superb video. We've been catching decent smooth hounds up in Morecambe Bay these last couple of months. I agree: fantastic fish in every respect. Had a cracking 12lb starry smooth-hound on lug/squid a couple of weeks ago, so doesn't always have to be peeler up here, thought it's still top bait for many. I like your pulley pennel dropper rig - will be making up some of those before next session. I fish alone at night off rocks too, so ought to get myself a life jacket - yours looks nice and lightweight and not too obtrusive - what make is it? Once again, top job on the video. I can't imagine how you keep up with it on a hectic session like this but it's hugely appreciated.

A different species in the same genus is one of the most popular saltwater sportfishing targets here in Southern Australia. It grows to 25 kg and is both magnificent sport and magnificent eating. They're the most prized target off beaches here and very popular in both the commercial and charter realms too, people will pay up to the equivalent of about 100 pounds a person to target them from charter boats. We dream of sessions like yours, great video!

Great catch! I did that once with a large Salmon! I lost a huge fish on the Salmon fly rod I was fishing a shrimp fly on 12lb leader lost it after 20 mins I was gutted, next day I was Sea Trout fishing with the smaller 9ft rod and 6lb leader and a little Black Pennal fly, I only went and landed a 24 and a half pound Salmon with my fly and leader in it from day before! I was gobsmacked

Got to say I'm not a fan of sand eel as bait at all, people rave about it but I've not had much success. Last year my mate was using peeler and I was next to him using squid. We were hitting smoothies all night but he was getting hooked up within 5 minutes of casting (even less) where as I found I would have to wait 10-15 minutes, they really do home in on the peelers.

Great video as always John - Question - I follow Trojs Fishing and he has amazing success using cable sheathing as mackerel feathers that catch everything in Guernsey and I wondered if you did the same in your area whether you would have the same success? They look just like a large string of large sandeels and the Pollack love them? Just a thought.

When they are running, Smut fishing has to be my favourite shore fishing of the year. The screaming takes and the hard fight, awesome. Unfortunately here on the Isle of Wight most of the good marks have been messed up with drifting weed this year, so I have only seen a few. Great video, and a session to remember.

Great smoothhounds enjoyed watching that. Do think you choice of hook link is a bit light for smoothies tho a sliding penel and floro are a bad combination. try a few tests in your shed putting all the strain on the penel hook as it does not take much to break it after a few fish

Hi pal, I-ve had hundreds of hounds over the years & never thought of eating them, I-ve also been on boats out of Grimsby & guys have preferred them over cod, have you ever tried them? I know they are a big thing in Australia but unsure over here, cheers
