been fly fishing for the better part of 30 years, tie my own flies, never use chemical floatants for dries. Have found that the fish (cutthroat) in my area feed in the first 4 to 8 inches of the water column, and mainly feed on caddis flies in all their various forms. mayflies and stoneflies are also in abundance in the area but I have found that the fish prefer caddis flies, but they will only take caddis dries in sizes 16 to 20 nothing larger and nothing smaller, Have caught some of the best fish on size 18 green caddis, super simple fly to tie all you need is 3 to 4 peacock hurls and a grizzly hackle, very similar a Griffith's Gnat but tied in a wet fly pattern on a dry fly hook, if you are wanting to fish a little deeper n the water column use a wet fly hook in the same size. when you are done tying this fly it should look like a tiny green woolly bugger without the tail, This pattern has worked for me on rivers, streams, and lakes. good luck and happy fishing

Trout look at surface flies from under the water. Size and shape are what's important. Color, not so much.
