You could try pipewire on arch now. Pipewire-pulse provides almost all of what is needed to replace pulseaudio, where only applications like pulseeffects have stopped working (and is being rewritten to use pipewire).
Pipewire-jack also lets jack clients use pipewire, with pipewire-jack-dropin making jack clients use pipewire by default. You can then use something like patchage to route audio from application to application like in jack. Basically, if an application uses pulse, it will automatically connect to your audio input/output. If an application uses jack, it has to be connected manually using something like patchage. This makes it much easier to just capture a single application's audio when recording with OBS. Just add a jack source to your scenes in OBS.
I've been using pipewire for a week now with the pulseeffects-git package (for equalizer), and my only issues occur when I accidentally cause an out of memory issue. But it looks like to me that pulseaudio is going to become legacy software soon.

In think it would be better to just understand -systemd- as a brand or a suite of tools. People often think that there is one giant monolith of software that does everything which is not true. systemd-boot, systemd-networkd, systemd-resolved, systemd-homed, systemd-nspawn, and of course systemd (the init system itself) are separate binaries that you can or cannot use without the others.
I wonder how many of the systemd FUD could have been avoided if all these programs just had other names than systemd-- (like systemd-boot-formerly known as gummiboot-even had at one point before it was rebranded).

I'm sorry DT but when your dance with the devil you're gonna get burnt at some point. Microsoft is going to burn us (FOSS Community) at some point. I can't say when or how but I do know why, MS has share holders and those share holders want $$$ and they want was much $$$ as they can get. Much like a virus I don't think they'll be satisfied until they infect the entire computer software industry. JMHO. As always great I information, especially for those of us that just don't have the time. THNX!

people are negative about systemd because they see it as a init system
its not an init system is a service manager, it so happens to manage an init system.
its also not monolithic, it a suite of 70 binaries. distro maintainer can choose what part to use: ubuntu touch for example currently uses upstart, but it does have some traces of systemd; its also based on ubuntu 16.04

I personally think that we have a Roger Bannister moment here.. now that Apple has shown the world that it can be done, it's only a matter of time before computers start going the way of ARM.
I also see Microsoft polishing up Windows on ARM and working to get it up to snuff. As for Linux, it already has ARM support, it's only a matter of adding some polish.

The joining forces segment here was thought provoking. I would love to see a community develop around brokering FOSS distro mergers. As it stands, there is incredible overlap in a lot of distros that could theoretically be merged into really sweet mega-distros that I think would have more mainstream appeal.

Snap really annoys me that apps installed via snap don't respect my cursor-theme (in both gnome and i3) and instead defaults to that super small and ugly cursor. Anytime I can avoid installing something with snap i do, been enjoying AppImages more recently.

Hey DT, I'm interested in Qubes OS but unfortunately it's a little too limiting for me. I know simply running VMs in my current OS (PopOS) isn't exactly the same as Qubes, but would it be a viable middle-ground between Qubes and PopOS for security?

I just hope in an attempt to catch up with apple macs, future PCs will not become locked up like current phones where you have to risk your device getting bricked just to install a different OS.
Why are smartphone like this anyway?

Oh, I do believe that Linus likes Macs. I bet that he buys his wife's children new ones every year with the money that he makes from developing the kernel for Richard Stallman's operating system.
